“You all are in situations every week – more than I am, I’m sure – where there’s this thing that goes off inside of you: ‘I ought to say something here. I know a truth I ought to talk about. I ought to say it, but…I probably won’t do it. It might be received poorly.’
“Yes. Most of the time it will be received poorly. That’s the way it is. Then you can come back to church for the Eucharist and in the prayers of the people you can complain to God about the fact that it was received poorly and things ought to be better.
“My first bishop said, ‘Just remember what happened to Jesus, John. You’ll know that you rose from the dead, but no one else will.’
“We are empowered to share our faith. We’re so fortunate in our tradition to have a way to talk about this that is life giving, healing, and transforming. We just need to do it.”
