Cello recital – Nathan Whittaker

On Saturday May 30, at 7:30 pm Episcopal Church of the Redeemer presents a recital by cellist Nathan Whittaker. The performance will feature music by J. S. Bach, Domenico Gabrielli, Arvo Part, and Gaspar Cassado.

Nathan Whittaker, cello, received his first cello at age eight and pursued study at the Georgia Academy of Music where he won the Alice B. Williams Award. In 1995, he was awarded the Woodward Scholarship at the Taft School where he studied cello with acclaimed performer and teacher, Peter Wiley. He graduated Cum Laude and was the recipient of the P.T.Young Music Award. In 2003, Mr. Whittaker graduated Cum Laude from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Cello Performance and received a Masters Degree in Cello Performance from Indiana University the following year. His private instructors have included Helga Winold, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Stanley Ritchie, Peter Wiley, Robert Marsh and Toby Saks.
Mr. Whittaker has served on the faculty at the Indiana University String academy, the principle cellist of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and associate principle cellist with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, the primary lecturer for the “Behind the Scenes†program, and established a successful private studio in central Indiana. In addition to his activity as a modern cellist, Mr. Whittaker is a recognized baroque cellist and has performed both as a soloist and a continuo cellist with such artists as Stanley Ritchie, Alison Edberg, Ingrid Matthews, Marc Destrubé, and Rachel Barton Pine.
Currently, Mr. Whittaker is enjoying a career of teaching and performing. Since moving to Seattle in 2006, Mr. Whittaker, has become a staple in the musical scene around the Puget Sound. He is a member of the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, and regularly performs with the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra, Yakima Symphony, Bellevue Philharmonic, Pacific Baroque Orchestra (B.C.), and Concerto Baroque. Additionally, he teaches cello privately and at the Chopin Academy of Music in Issaquah, WA, is a coach for the Academy of Music Northwest and the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra, and is nearing completion of a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Washington.
