Lay readers
Lay readers are non-clergy members of the congregation who read the first and second lessons of the Eucharistic liturgy, and lead the Prayers of the People. They also distribute wine from the chalice during communion. Also called Lectors and Chalice Bearers, lay readers also serve on special occasions such as the Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols and the Easter Vigil.
A clear reading voice, a willingness to review the lessons beforehand, and the ability to speak in front of a large group are the only requirements for serving as a lay reader.
In addition to lay readers, the laity have several other liturgical responsiblities:
- Sacristans help set up the altar for services
- Acolytes assist the priest at the altar
- Greeters welcome people as they arrive at church and hand out copies of the day’s worship schedule.
- Welcomers greet visitors, make sure they know what to expect from an Episcopal service, and are available to answer their questions.
If you are interested in serving in any of these areas, please contact the church through e-mail at office@redeemer-kenmore.org or call (425) 486-3777.
