Persecuted, oil on canvas, 42″ x 54″, ©Jani Freimann 2008, $1700
Jani writes the following about this painting, one of two that she made illustrating the Beatitudes that will be exhibited in Out of Darkness:
Matthew 5:10,11 “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness for theirs in the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.”
I chose four background figures to represent the spirits of Cynicism, Anger, Mocking, and Gossip. Four ways in which Christians in our country experience persecution. The fifth figure is the Christian who is unclothed to show his vulnerability in the flesh. The Christian is in a posture of surrender to the Holy Spirit. In the painted version, he has running paint all over him. This is the Christian being clothed by the Holy Spirit. The four in the background also have running paint on them. It is hard to not be affected by the work of the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 6: 10-13 “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devils schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Jani is a Washington state artist and she has orginal works at Gallery 96 in Tacoma, Washington. You can see more of her work on her website, and her email is janifreimann@msn.com.

Peace Within the Storm, acrylic & gold leaf on canvas, 36″ x 18″, ©Renee Cooke 2008, $1000
Renee says this about her entries for Out of Darkness, two of which will be exhibited: In these paintings, the thing that resonates for me is that God gave us His only son and that He is the light of the world. Even in our darkest hour, He is always there. If you seek Him, you will find Him. He is hope, love, comfort, and peace.
Coming out of darkness means something different for many of us: alcoholism, drugs, a death in the family, divorce. But in the light there is salvation, prayer, and the hope that we will overcome our darkness and be in His glorious light.

Gene Leonardson wrote:
In case you are still collecting book titles, the one I have been reading recently is Wallace Stegner and the American West by Philip L. Fradkin.
Those who have enjoyed Stegner’s fiction, both the stories and the writing, will enjoy this book. It ties together the course of his life with the characters and action of his works. I suppose because Fradkin wants to be sure to be objective, the chapter on the controversy over Angle of Repose is too long. Nevertheless, this biography is a pleasure to read.
