What is Advent and why is it important?

Feel like you need an extra dose of grace to get through Thanksgiving Day? Come celebrate Holy Eucharist in the Nave at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 27.

The Annual Christmas Shelter Shopping Trip is scheduled for Saturday, December 13th starting at 10:00 AM. We need volunteers to drive the families to the Lake City Fred Meyer and wait while they shop. We also need volunteers to provide craft projects for the children while the parents are shopping. Volunteers must provide all materials necessary for the craft project. Holy Apostles will again be providing lunch for the families and volunteers.

A sign-up sheet is posted on the Outreach Bulletin Board for all volunteers. If you have any questions, please call Gracy Karp or Deborah Randall.

SmiteFest: The Advent is a night of video games, pizza, and generally bringing the noise and/or funk. All Seattle-area gamers are invited.

The Throwdown: Episcopal churches throughout the Diocese of Olympia have been challenged to come and play Rock Band 2 head-to-head against each other in an Episcopalian vs. Episcopalian throwdown: the loser has to attend the winner’s church within 30 days. Will they accept the challenge?

Will there be churchy stuff? Not at SmiteFest, though at 7:00 one of Redeemer’s more medieval services — Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament — takes place upstairs in the Nave. If you’re interested in chanting, incense, meditation, and readings from 4th-century mystics, come on up.

The CR Gallery at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer celebrates the opening of its new art exhibit “Out of Darkness (Into Light)” with an artist reception.

The reception is from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on Thursday, December 11th. Come for wine, cheese, music, and a chance to meet some of the many artists whose work is on display.

Join us for a contemplative evening of Advent readings and music on Saturday, December 6 at 7:30 PM. The service will include Taizé music and Advent hymns, and a beautiful new altarpiece designed by artist-in-residence Angela Wales Rockett and painted by members of the congregation.

What is Advent?

Over the past two weeks I’ve spoken with a lot of people who volunteered on the Presidential campaigns. They’ve seen the difference their efforts can make in the world and they want to keep going — but they don’t know where or how they can help.

If you’re energized and excited and looking for ways to serve your community, use this tool provided by the United Way to search for volunteer opportunities in North King County and beyond.

At Redeemer we serve our immediate community in a variety of ways including providing monetary assistance, Safeway certificates, needed items for transitional housing, meals on Thanksgiving, a Christmas shopping trip and Christmas meals and gifts. Members of our congregation can support Outreach and the Kenmore Shelter by donating money, food, or volunteering their time.

Fr. John will be away on a spiritual retreat from November 17th through the 21st. No services will be held at Redeemer during that time, though as always you are encouraged to pray the Daily Office wherever you may be. (You may enjoy the podcast Pray As You Go.)

Redeemer will celebrate the Feast of Christ the King with a 10:30 AM Choral Eucharist featuring special music provided by guest trumpeter Judson Scott.

On Saturday, November 22 there will be a special choral evensong to celebrate the Eve of Christ the King, with music performed by the men of the Redeemer Choir. Refreshments will be served afterward.

If you are a tenor or bass in the congregation interested in singing evensong with the choir, please contact Sheila Bristow (rehearsal is Wednesday evening at 7:30).

Friends of the Memorial Gardens will be assembling Advent Wreaths on Saturday, November 29 in the undercroft.  We welcome help!  Coffee and goodies will be served.

No experience needed — Jane Sprague, our wreath advisor will be there. Starting time is 10:00 am.

What is an Advent wreath, and what do you do with it?

There will be no services at Redeemer on November 14th and 15th because Fr. John and several of our parishioners will be attending the 98th Annual Diocesan Convention.

Wednesday night Evening Prayer has been cancelled, and there will be no services held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week. Fr. John will be participating in the Bishop’s Advisory Committee on Ordained Ministry.
