SUMMARY:The 19th Sunday after Pentecost\, Proper 22A
DESCRIPTION:Lessons appointed for use for this day from the Revised Common Lectionary (Episcopal version). \n\n\n\nExodus 20:1-4\,7-9\,12-20 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nThen God spoke all these words: \n\n\n\nI am the Lord your God\, who brought you out of the land of Egypt\, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. \n\n\n\nYou shall not make for yourself an idol\, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above\, or that is on the earth beneath\, or that is in the water under the earth. \n\n\n\nYou shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God\, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. \n\n\n\nRemember the sabbath day\, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. \n\n\n\nHonour your father and your mother\, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. \n\n\n\nYou shall not murder. \n\n\n\nYou shall not commit adultery. \n\n\n\nYou shall not steal. \n\n\n\nYou shall not bear false witness against your neighbour. \n\n\n\nYou shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife\, or male or female slave\, or ox\, or donkey\, or anything that belongs to your neighbour. \n\n\n\nWhen all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning\, the sound of the trumpet\, and the mountain smoking\, they were afraid and trembled and stood at a distance\, and said to Moses\, ‘You speak to us\, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us\, or we will die.’ Moses said to the people\, ‘Do not be afraid; for God has come only to test you and to put the fear of him upon you so that you do not sin.’ \n\n\n\nPsalm 19 (BCP)\n\n\n\nCœli enarrant \n\n\n\n1 The heavens declare the glory of God\, *    and the firmament shows his handiwork. \n\n\n\n2 One day tells its tale to another\, *    and one night imparts knowledge to another. \n\n\n\n3 Although they have no words or language\, *    and their voices are not heard\, \n\n\n\n4 Their sound has gone out into all lands\, *    and their message to the ends of the world. \n\n\n\n5 In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; *    it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to run its course. \n\n\n\n6 It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens and runs about to the end of it again; *    nothing is hidden from its burning heat. \n\n\n\n7 The law of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul; *    the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent. \n\n\n\n8 The statutes of the Lord are just and rejoice the heart; *    the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes. \n\n\n\n9 The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; *    the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. \n\n\n\n10 More to be desired are they than gold\, more than much fine gold\, *    sweeter far than honey\, than honey in the comb. \n\n\n\n11 By them also is your servant enlightened\, *    and in keeping them there is great reward. \n\n\n\n12 Who can tell how often he offends? *    cleanse me from my secret faults. \n\n\n\n13 Above all\, keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion over me; *    then shall I be whole and sound\, and innocent of a great offense. \n\n\n\n14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight\, *    O Lord\, my strength and my redeemer. \n\n\n\nPhilippians 3:4b-14 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nIf anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh\, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day\, a member of the people of Israel\, of the tribe of Benjamin\, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law\, a Pharisee; as to zeal\, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law\, blameless.Yet whatever gains I had\, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that\, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things\, and I regard them as rubbish\, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him\, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law\, but one that comes through faith in Christ\, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death\, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own\, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved\, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead\, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. \n\n\n\nMatthew 21:33-46 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus said\, “Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard\, put a fence around it\, dug a wine press in it\, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the harvest time had come\, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one\, killed another\, and stoned another. Again he sent other slaves\, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them\, saying\, ‘They will respect my son.’ But when the tenants saw the son\, they said to themselves\, ‘This is the heir; come\, let us kill him and get his inheritance.” So they seized him\, threw him out of the vineyard\, and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes\, what will he do to those tenants?” They said to him\, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death\, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.”Jesus said to them\, “Have you never read in the scriptures: \n\n\n\n‘The stone that the builders rejected     has become the cornerstone;this was the Lord’s doing\,     and it is amazing in our eyes’? \n\n\n\nTherefore I tell you\, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables\, they realized that he was speaking about them. They wanted to arrest him\, but they feared the crowds\, because they regarded him as a prophet. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:In-person Holy Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome at Church of the Redeemer. We look forward to seeing you at this 8:00 am Sunday service of Holy Eucharist at Church of the Redeemer. It is in-person only. \n\n\n\nWhile not required\, you may wear a mask when in the building. We have masks available for you\, if you want. \n\n\n\nEucharist\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is the sacrament of Christ’s body and blood\, and the principal act of Christian worship. The term is from the Greek\, “thanksgiving.” \n\n\n\nJesus instituted the Eucharist “on the night when he was betrayed.” At the Last Supper he shared the bread and cup of wine at a sacred meal with his disciples. He identified the bread with his body and the wine with his blood of the new covenant. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Mark 14:22-25; Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:14-20). \n\n\n\nChrist’s sacrifice is made present by the Eucharist\, and in it we are united to his one self-offering (Book of Common Prayer\, p. 859). The Last Supper provides the basis for the fourfold Eucharistic action of taking\, blessing\, breaking\, and sharing. Christ’s body and blood are really present in the sacrament of the Eucharist and received by faith. Christ’s presence is also known in the gathered eucharistic community. \n\n\n\nIn the Book of Common Prayer\, the whole service is entitled the Holy Eucharist. \n\n\n\n\nThe first part of the service is designated the Word of God. It usually includes the entrance rite\, the lessons and gradual psalm\, the gospel\, the sermon\, the Nicene Creed\, the Prayers of the People\, the confession of sin and absolution\, and the Peace.\n\n\n\nThe second portion of the service is designated the Holy Communion. It includes the offertory\, the consecration of the bread and wine in the Great Thanksgiving\, the communion of the people\, and the concluding prayers of thanksgiving and dismissal. A blessing may be given prior to the dismissal.\n\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is also called the Lord’s Supper\, Holy Communion\, the Divine Liturgy\, the Mass\, and the Great Offertory (BCP\, p. 859). \n\n\n\nThe Hymnal 1982 includes a section with a variety of hymns for the Holy Eucharist (Numbers 300 through 347)\, including “Come\, risen Lord\, and deign to be our guest” (305 and 306)\, “My God\, thy table now is spread” (321)\, “Now\, my tongue\, the mystery telling” (329 through 331)\, and “I am the bread of life” (335). \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Eucharist .)

SUMMARY:Blessing of the Animals
DESCRIPTION:Come\, commemorate St. Francis of Assisi by having your furry\, scaly\, or feathery friends blessed after church services on October 8\, 2023\, in Kenmore Town Square\, between the Hanger and Stoup Brewing. Fr. Jed will be blessing animals from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. This event is free. We invite everyone in the community. \n\n\n\nPlease make sure you have your pets restrained or controlled. This keeps them and others safe.  \n\n\n\nKenmore Town Square is at  6728 Northeast 181st Street\, about 0.4 miles east of the church campus. \n\n\n\nThese are pictures from some previous animal blessings at the Redeemer campus and at Town Square. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrancis of Assisi\n\n\n\nFrancis of Assisi (1181 or 1182-Oct. 3\, 1226) was a thirteenth-century saint and founder of the Franciscan order. He was born in Assisi in central Italy and named Giovanni Bernardone. His father changed his name to Francesco\, “the Frenchman\,” after a visit to France. \n\n\n\nFrancis’s gradual conversion began in the spring of 1205. He gave generously to the poor and became devoted to “Lady Poverty.” Francis stressed absolute simplicity of life marked by poverty\, humility\, and contemplation of Christ. Others gathered around him. \n\n\n\n\nOn February 24\, 1209\, the Order of Friars Minor (Fratres minores)\, sometimes called Minorites\, was founded. In England they were popularly called Grey Friars because of the color of their habit. \n\n\n\nThe Second Order of St. Francis\, known as the Poor Clares\, was established for nuns in 1219. \n\n\n\nThe Third Order for lay men and women was founded in 1221. \n\n\n\n\nFrancis is especially remembered for his writing\, “The Canticle of Brother Sun.” The Hymnal 1982 includes two hymn texts written by Francis\, “All creatures of our God and King” (400) and “Most High\, omnipotent\, good Lord” (406-407). \n\n\n\nThe hymn text “Lord make us servants of your peace” (593) is based on a prayer attributed to Francis. \n\n\n\nHe died in Assisi. Francis is commemorated in the Episcopal calendar of the church year on October 4. \n\n\n\nFrancis is the patron saint of animals and the environment. Worship inspired by this Feast typically include pet blessings\, prayers for environmental protection and conservation\, and a call to a lifestyle based in simplicity and service of others.

SUMMARY:Questioning Together and Compline – 20s/30s
DESCRIPTION:How does a sense of place shape theology and belief? Join us at Saint Mark’s Leffler House for a conversation with other young adults. Explore how different social\, political\, and geographic landscapes can provide different contexts of expressing faith. This is with Canon Elise Johnstone from St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in West Seattle. Dessert provided. \n\n\n\nAt 9:15 pm\, we’ll head over to Compline together. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Email Emily Meeks (emeeks@saintmarks.org). \n\n\n\nAbout Questioning Together and Compline\n\n\n\nEach month we’ll explore a question of faith together with a facilitator providing background on the topic before open discussion. At 9:15 pm\, we’ll head over to Compline in St. Mark’s Cathedral together. \n\n\n\nThis year\, we’ll have facilitators from Saint Mark’s and across the Diocese. \n\n\n\nIn September\, Questioning Together and Compline will be held on the second Sunday of each month.
