SUMMARY:The 21st Sunday after Pentecost\, Proper 24A
DESCRIPTION:Lessons appointed for use for this day from the Revised Common Lectionary (Episcopal version). \n\n\n\nExodus 33:12-23 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nMoses said to the Lord\, ‘See\, you have said to me\, “Bring up this people”; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said\, “I know you by name\, and you have also found favour in my sight.” Now if I have found favour in your sight\, show me your ways\, so that I may know you and find favour in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.’ He said\, ‘My presence will go with you\, and I will give you rest.’ And he said to him\, ‘If your presence will not go\, do not carry us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favour in your sight\, I and your people\, unless you go with us? In this way\, we shall be distinct\, I and your people\, from every people on the face of the earth.’ \n\n\n\nThe Lord said to Moses\, ‘I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favour in my sight\, and I know you by name.’ Moses said\, ‘Show me your glory\, I pray.’ And he said\, ‘I will make all my goodness pass before you\, and will proclaim before you the name\, “The Lord”; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious\, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But’\, he said\, ‘you cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live.’ And the Lord continued\, ‘See\, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock; and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock\, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; then I will take away my hand\, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen.’ \n\n\n\nPsalm 99 (BCP)\n\n\n\nDominus regnavit \n\n\n\n1 The Lord is King; let the people tremble; *     he is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth shake. \n\n\n\n2 The Lord is great in Zion; *     he is high above all peoples. \n\n\n\n3 Let them confess his Name\, which is great and awesome; *     he is the Holy One. \n\n\n\n4 “O mighty King\, lover of justice\, you have established equity; *     you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.” \n\n\n\n5 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God and fall down before his footstool; *     he is the Holy One. \n\n\n\n6 Moses and Aaron among his priests\, and Samuel among those who call upon his Name\, *     they called upon the Lord\, and he answered them. \n\n\n\n7 He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; *     they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them. \n\n\n\n8 “O Lord our God\, you answered them indeed; *you were a God who forgave them\, yet punished them for their evil deeds.” \n\n\n\n9 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God and worship him upon his holy hill; *     for the Lord our God is the Holy One. \n\n\n\n1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nPaul\, Silvanus\, and Timothy\, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers\, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know\, brothers and sisters beloved by God\, that he has chosen you\, because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only\, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord\, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit\, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia\, but in every place your faith in God has become known\, so that we have no need to speak about it. For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you\, and how you turned to God from idols\, to serve a living and true God\, and to wait for his Son from heaven\, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus\, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming. \n\n\n\nMatthew 22:15-22 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nThe Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him\, along with the Herodians\, saying\, “Teacher\, we know that you are sincere\, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth\, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us\, then\, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor\, or not?” But Jesus\, aware of their malice\, said\, “Why are you putting me to the test\, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them\, “Whose head is this\, and whose title?” They answered\, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them\, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s\, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard this\, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:In-person Holy Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome at Church of the Redeemer. We look forward to seeing you at this 8:00 am Sunday service of Holy Eucharist at Church of the Redeemer. It is in-person only. \n\n\n\nWhile not required\, you may wear a mask when in the building. We have masks available for you\, if you want. \n\n\n\nEucharist\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is the sacrament of Christ’s body and blood\, and the principal act of Christian worship. The term is from the Greek\, “thanksgiving.” \n\n\n\nJesus instituted the Eucharist “on the night when he was betrayed.” At the Last Supper he shared the bread and cup of wine at a sacred meal with his disciples. He identified the bread with his body and the wine with his blood of the new covenant. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Mark 14:22-25; Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:14-20). \n\n\n\nChrist’s sacrifice is made present by the Eucharist\, and in it we are united to his one self-offering (Book of Common Prayer\, p. 859). The Last Supper provides the basis for the fourfold Eucharistic action of taking\, blessing\, breaking\, and sharing. Christ’s body and blood are really present in the sacrament of the Eucharist and received by faith. Christ’s presence is also known in the gathered eucharistic community. \n\n\n\nIn the Book of Common Prayer\, the whole service is entitled the Holy Eucharist. \n\n\n\n\nThe first part of the service is designated the Word of God. It usually includes the entrance rite\, the lessons and gradual psalm\, the gospel\, the sermon\, the Nicene Creed\, the Prayers of the People\, the confession of sin and absolution\, and the Peace.\n\n\n\nThe second portion of the service is designated the Holy Communion. It includes the offertory\, the consecration of the bread and wine in the Great Thanksgiving\, the communion of the people\, and the concluding prayers of thanksgiving and dismissal. A blessing may be given prior to the dismissal.\n\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is also called the Lord’s Supper\, Holy Communion\, the Divine Liturgy\, the Mass\, and the Great Offertory (BCP\, p. 859). \n\n\n\nThe Hymnal 1982 includes a section with a variety of hymns for the Holy Eucharist (Numbers 300 through 347)\, including “Come\, risen Lord\, and deign to be our guest” (305 and 306)\, “My God\, thy table now is spread” (321)\, “Now\, my tongue\, the mystery telling” (329 through 331)\, and “I am the bread of life” (335). \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Eucharist .)

SUMMARY:Proclaim! multigenerational education class
DESCRIPTION:Multigenerational Christian education begins Sunday\, October 15\, 2023\, at Church of the Redeemer. Children and adults will be in the same class. Meet at the baptismal font\, back by the organ\, at 9:30 am. We are at 6220 Northeast 181st Street in Kenmore\, Washington. Members and nonmembers can participate. \n\n\n\nWe welcome children to participate with adults in this class! There are children activities and reflection questions for their education\, interspersed with adult conversation. This promises to be a lovely examination of what we do in church—liturgy and mission—together. \n\n\n\nProclaim! book cover\n\n\n\nWe will be reading and discussing the book Proclaim! Sharing Words\, Living Examples\, Changing Lives by Marcus George Halley. The reading is light and enjoyable. \n\n\n\n\nChurch Publishing Incorporated\, $19.95 paperback\n\n\n\nAmazon\, $14.95 Kindle\, $19.95 paperback\n\n\n\nBarnes and Noble\, $14.95 eBook\, $19.95 paperback\n\n\n\nCathedral Book Store (Atlanta)\, $14.95 paperback\n\n\n\nKobo\, $13.99 eBook\n\n\n\n\nAdults should read the book to inform our discussion\, according to the guide below. It is not necessary for children to have read the book or have had it read to them. \n\n\n\nClass DaysChapters from Proclaim!TopicOctober 15Chapters 1-2Why are we here?October 22Chapters 3-4GatherOctober 29Chapter 5Proclaim and Respond to the WordNovember 5Chapters 6-7Pray and Exchange PeaceNovember 12Chapters 8PrepareNovember 19Chapters 9-10Make and Break BreadNovember 26Chapter 11Conclusion: Share and Go Forth\n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to participate in this class\, including those without a church home. There is no charge to attend the class. \n\n\n\nProclaim!\n\n\n\nA fresh perspective on how liturgy can support social justice work. Proclaim! is an exploration of Episcopal liturgy from a black\, queer\, millennial perspective\, with an eye toward proclamation and justice. Part memoir\, part history\, part biblical studies\, and part practical theology\, Proclaim! suggests that the politics of our liturgical tradition is the ground from which we can engage in the justice work that our world needs. \n\n\n\nEach chapter explores theology\, a biblical story\, and the real-world practice of evangelism and mission. The liturgy can serve as the theological well from which we might draw wisdom to engage the issues of justice\, equity\, and compassion in the world today. The question is not whether or not to engage politics; rather\, the question is: whose politics are being reflected? \n\n\n\nFurthermore\, what shape might our lives take if we took our worship of God seriously? People who are curious about what justice looks like in the Church or who are seeking new resources to sustain their work will be affirmed in Halley’s book.
