SUMMARY:All Saints (observed)
DESCRIPTION:Lessons appointed for use for this day from the Revised Common Lectionary (Episcopal version). \n\n\n\nRevelation 7:9-17 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nI looked\, and there was a great multitude that no one could count\, from every nation\, from all tribes and peoples and languages\, standing before the throne and before the Lamb\, robed in white\, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice\, saying\, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne\, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures\, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God\, singing\, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” Then one of the elders addressed me\, saying\, “Who are these\, robed in white\, and where have they come from?” I said to him\, “Sir\, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me\, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God\, and worship him day and night within his temple\, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more\, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them\, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd\, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life\, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” \n\n\n\nPsalm 34:1-10\,22 (BCP)\n\n\n\nBenedicam Dominum \n\n\n\n1 I will bless the Lord at all times; *    his praise shall ever be in my mouth.2 I will glory in the Lord; *    let the humble hear and rejoice.3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; *    let us exalt his Name together.4 I sought the Lord\, and he answered me *    and delivered me out of all my terror.5 Look upon him and be radiant\, *    and let not your faces be ashamed.6 I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me *    and saved me from all my troubles.7 The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him\, *    and he will deliver them.8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; *    happy are they who trust in him!9 Fear the Lord\, you that are his saints\, *    for those who fear him lack nothing.10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger\, *    but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good.22 The Lord ransoms the life of his servants\, *    and none will be punished who trust in him. \n\n\n\n1 John 3:1-3 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nSee what love the Father has given us\, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved\, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed\, we will be like him\, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves\, just as he is pure. \n\n\n\nMatthew 5:1-12 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nWhen Jesus saw the crowds\, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down\, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak\, and taught them\, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit\, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn\, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek\, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness\, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful\, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart\, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers\, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake\, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad\, for your reward is great in heaven\, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. Used by permission. All rights reserved. \n\n\n\nThe Psalm is from the Book of Common Prayer\, 1979.

SUMMARY:In-person Holy Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome at Church of the Redeemer. We look forward to seeing you at this 8:00 am Sunday service of Holy Eucharist at Church of the Redeemer. It is in-person only. \n\n\n\nWhile not required\, you may wear a mask when in the building. We have masks available for you\, if you want. \n\n\n\nEucharist\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is the sacrament of Christ’s body and blood\, and the principal act of Christian worship. The term is from the Greek\, “thanksgiving.” \n\n\n\nJesus instituted the Eucharist “on the night when he was betrayed.” At the Last Supper he shared the bread and cup of wine at a sacred meal with his disciples. He identified the bread with his body and the wine with his blood of the new covenant. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Mark 14:22-25; Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:14-20). \n\n\n\nChrist’s sacrifice is made present by the Eucharist\, and in it we are united to his one self-offering (Book of Common Prayer\, p. 859). The Last Supper provides the basis for the fourfold Eucharistic action of taking\, blessing\, breaking\, and sharing. Christ’s body and blood are really present in the sacrament of the Eucharist and received by faith. Christ’s presence is also known in the gathered eucharistic community. \n\n\n\nIn the Book of Common Prayer\, the whole service is entitled the Holy Eucharist. \n\n\n\n\nThe first part of the service is designated the Word of God. It usually includes the entrance rite\, the lessons and gradual psalm\, the gospel\, the sermon\, the Nicene Creed\, the Prayers of the People\, the confession of sin and absolution\, and the Peace.\n\n\n\nThe second portion of the service is designated the Holy Communion. It includes the offertory\, the consecration of the bread and wine in the Great Thanksgiving\, the communion of the people\, and the concluding prayers of thanksgiving and dismissal. A blessing may be given prior to the dismissal.\n\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is also called the Lord’s Supper\, Holy Communion\, the Divine Liturgy\, the Mass\, and the Great Offertory (BCP\, p. 859). \n\n\n\nThe Hymnal 1982 includes a section with a variety of hymns for the Holy Eucharist (Numbers 300 through 347)\, including “Come\, risen Lord\, and deign to be our guest” (305 and 306)\, “My God\, thy table now is spread” (321)\, “Now\, my tongue\, the mystery telling” (329 through 331)\, and “I am the bread of life” (335). \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Eucharist .)

SUMMARY:Proclaim! multigenerational education class
DESCRIPTION:Multigenerational Christian education begins Sunday\, October 15\, 2023\, at Church of the Redeemer. Children and adults will be in the same class. Meet at the baptismal font\, back by the organ\, at 9:30 am. We are at 6220 Northeast 181st Street in Kenmore\, Washington. Members and nonmembers can participate. \n\n\n\nWe welcome children to participate with adults in this class! There are children activities and reflection questions for their education\, interspersed with adult conversation. This promises to be a lovely examination of what we do in church—liturgy and mission—together. \n\n\n\nProclaim! book cover\n\n\n\nWe will be reading and discussing the book Proclaim! Sharing Words\, Living Examples\, Changing Lives by Marcus George Halley. The reading is light and enjoyable. \n\n\n\n\nChurch Publishing Incorporated\, $19.95 paperback\n\n\n\nAmazon\, $14.95 Kindle\, $19.95 paperback\n\n\n\nBarnes and Noble\, $14.95 eBook\, $19.95 paperback\n\n\n\nCathedral Book Store (Atlanta)\, $14.95 paperback\n\n\n\nKobo\, $13.99 eBook\n\n\n\n\nAdults should read the book to inform our discussion\, according to the guide below. It is not necessary for children to have read the book or have had it read to them. \n\n\n\nClass DaysChapters from Proclaim!TopicOctober 15Chapters 1-2Why are we here?October 22Chapters 3-4GatherOctober 29Chapter 5Proclaim and Respond to the WordNovember 5Chapters 6-7Pray and Exchange PeaceNovember 12Chapters 8PrepareNovember 19Chapters 9-10Make and Break BreadNovember 26Chapter 11Conclusion: Share and Go Forth\n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to participate in this class\, including those without a church home. There is no charge to attend the class. \n\n\n\nProclaim!\n\n\n\nA fresh perspective on how liturgy can support social justice work. Proclaim! is an exploration of Episcopal liturgy from a black\, queer\, millennial perspective\, with an eye toward proclamation and justice. Part memoir\, part history\, part biblical studies\, and part practical theology\, Proclaim! suggests that the politics of our liturgical tradition is the ground from which we can engage in the justice work that our world needs. \n\n\n\nEach chapter explores theology\, a biblical story\, and the real-world practice of evangelism and mission. The liturgy can serve as the theological well from which we might draw wisdom to engage the issues of justice\, equity\, and compassion in the world today. The question is not whether or not to engage politics; rather\, the question is: whose politics are being reflected? \n\n\n\nFurthermore\, what shape might our lives take if we took our worship of God seriously? People who are curious about what justice looks like in the Church or who are seeking new resources to sustain their work will be affirmed in Halley’s book.
