SUMMARY:Seasonal giving for those experiencing housing insecurity
DESCRIPTION:Every year for more than 30 years\, Church of the Redeemer has provided help during this time of year to the 11 families living at Hopelink Kenmore Place. There are a few different ways you can help. \n\n\n\nThank you for the help you provide these families. Reach out to Michelle Henderson with any questions at hkp@redeemer-kenmore.org. \n\n\n\nWe need your help to assist those facing housing insecurity. There are two ways to help. Can you help us help others? \n\n\n\nMoney to buy food gift cards\n\n\n\nEach family receives a $100 gift card for food at Thanksgiving and a second $100 gift card in December. This means we need to collect $2200 for 22 cards by December 17. \n\n\n\n\nDonate money to Hopelink Kenmore Place outreach\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChurch of the Redeemer provides support to Hopelink Kenmore Place throughout the year. Any extra money raised for food gift cards at this time will go to other support for those at Kenmore Place. \n\n\n\nPurchase a welcome gift for a child or teen\n\n\n\nWhen a child or teen moves with their family into Hopelink Kenmore Place\, they may have anxiety. To help them feel welcome\, they are offered a gift that they choose. This can bring some comfort during a time of stress and change. \n\n\n\nWe collect these welcome gifts at Redeemer now to be offered year-round. (These are not holiday gifts.) We bring them to the Kenmore Place staff in January. Bring your unwrapped gift to Redeemer by December 17. There is a box to put your gift in the room where we worship. \n\n\n\n\nSelect a welcome gift to donate\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHopelink\n\n\n\nHopelink is a nonprofit organization working to end poverty in our community. Each year they help more than 64\,000 people through programs that provide stability and the skills and knowledge needed to exit poverty. \n\n\n\nHopelink provides a network of critical social services through a number of different programs—including the following: \n\n\n\n\nHousing.\n\n\n\nTransportation.\n\n\n\nFamily development.\n\n\n\nFinancial assistance.\n\n\n\nEmployment programs.\n\n\n\nAdult education.\n\n\n\nFinancial literacy training.\n\n\n\nFive food banks.\n\n\n\n\nFor families experiencing homelessness\, transitional and long-term housing as well as emergency family shelter may be available through Hopelink. \n\n\n\nRead more about Hopelink.

SUMMARY:The 25th Sunday after Pentecost\, Proper 28A
DESCRIPTION:Lessons appointed for use for this day from the Revised Common Lectionary (Episcopal version). \n\n\n\nJudges 4:1-7 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nThe Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord\, after Ehud died. So the Lord sold them into the hand of King Jabin of Canaan\, who reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was Sisera\, who lived in Harosheth-ha-goiim. Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron\, and had oppressed the Israelites cruelly for twenty years. \n\n\n\nAt that time Deborah\, a prophetess\, wife of Lappidoth\, was judging Israel. She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came up to her for judgement. She sent and summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali\, and said to him\, ‘The Lord\, the God of Israel\, commands you\, “Go\, take position at Mount Tabor\, bringing ten thousand from the tribe of Naphtali and the tribe of Zebulun. I will draw out Sisera\, the general of Jabin’s army\, to meet you by the Wadi Kishon with his chariots and his troops; and I will give him into your hand.” ’ \n\n\n\nPsalm 123 (BCP)\n\n\n\nAd te levavi oculos meos \n\n\n\n1 To you I lift up my eyes\, *     to you enthroned in the heavens.2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters\, *     and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress\,3 So our eyes look to the Lord our God\, *     until he show us his mercy.4 Have mercy upon us\, O Lord\, have mercy\, *     for we have had more than enough of contempt\,5 Too much of the scorn of the indolent rich\, *     and of the derision of the proud. \n\n\n\n1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nNow concerning the times and the seasons\, brothers and sisters\, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say\, “There is peace and security\,” then sudden destruction will come upon them\, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman\, and there will be no escape! But you\, beloved\, are not in darkness\, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do\, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night\, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day\, let us be sober\, and put on the breastplate of faith and love\, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ\, who died for us\, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other\, as indeed you are doing. \n\n\n\nMatthew 25:14-30 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus said\, “The kingdom of heaven will be as when a man\, going on a journey\, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents\, to another two\, to another one\, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them\, and made five more talents. In the same way\, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward\, bringing five more talents\, saying\, ‘Master\, you handed over to me five talents; see\, I have made five more talents.’ His master said to him\, ‘Well done\, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things\, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ And the one with the two talents also came forward\, saying\, ‘Master\, you handed over to me two talents; see\, I have made two more talents.’ His master said to him\, ‘Well done\, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things\, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward\, saying\, ‘Master\, I knew that you were a harsh man\, reaping where you did not sow\, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid\, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master replied\, ‘You wicked and lazy slave! You knew\, did you\, that I reap where I did not sow\, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers\, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him\, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have\, more will be given\, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing\, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave\, throw him into the outer darkness\, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:In-person Holy Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome at Church of the Redeemer. We look forward to seeing you at this 8:00 am Sunday service of Holy Eucharist at Church of the Redeemer. It is in-person only. \n\n\n\nWhile not required\, you may wear a mask when in the building. We have masks available for you\, if you want. \n\n\n\nEucharist\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is the sacrament of Christ’s body and blood\, and the principal act of Christian worship. The term is from the Greek\, “thanksgiving.” \n\n\n\nJesus instituted the Eucharist “on the night when he was betrayed.” At the Last Supper he shared the bread and cup of wine at a sacred meal with his disciples. He identified the bread with his body and the wine with his blood of the new covenant. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Mark 14:22-25; Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:14-20). \n\n\n\nChrist’s sacrifice is made present by the Eucharist\, and in it we are united to his one self-offering (Book of Common Prayer\, p. 859). The Last Supper provides the basis for the fourfold Eucharistic action of taking\, blessing\, breaking\, and sharing. Christ’s body and blood are really present in the sacrament of the Eucharist and received by faith. Christ’s presence is also known in the gathered eucharistic community. \n\n\n\nIn the Book of Common Prayer\, the whole service is entitled the Holy Eucharist. \n\n\n\n\nThe first part of the service is designated the Word of God. It usually includes the entrance rite\, the lessons and gradual psalm\, the gospel\, the sermon\, the Nicene Creed\, the Prayers of the People\, the confession of sin and absolution\, and the Peace.\n\n\n\nThe second portion of the service is designated the Holy Communion. It includes the offertory\, the consecration of the bread and wine in the Great Thanksgiving\, the communion of the people\, and the concluding prayers of thanksgiving and dismissal. A blessing may be given prior to the dismissal.\n\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is also called the Lord’s Supper\, Holy Communion\, the Divine Liturgy\, the Mass\, and the Great Offertory (BCP\, p. 859). \n\n\n\nThe Hymnal 1982 includes a section with a variety of hymns for the Holy Eucharist (Numbers 300 through 347)\, including “Come\, risen Lord\, and deign to be our guest” (305 and 306)\, “My God\, thy table now is spread” (321)\, “Now\, my tongue\, the mystery telling” (329 through 331)\, and “I am the bread of life” (335). \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Eucharist .)

SUMMARY:Proclaim! multigenerational education class
DESCRIPTION:Multigenerational Christian education begins Sunday\, October 15\, 2023\, at Church of the Redeemer. Children and adults will be in the same class. Meet at the baptismal font\, back by the organ\, at 9:30 am. We are at 6220 Northeast 181st Street in Kenmore\, Washington. Members and nonmembers can participate. \n\n\n\nWe welcome children to participate with adults in this class! There are children activities and reflection questions for their education\, interspersed with adult conversation. This promises to be a lovely examination of what we do in church—liturgy and mission—together. \n\n\n\nProclaim! book cover\n\n\n\nWe will be reading and discussing the book Proclaim! Sharing Words\, Living Examples\, Changing Lives by Marcus George Halley. The reading is light and enjoyable. \n\n\n\n\nChurch Publishing Incorporated\, $19.95 paperback\n\n\n\nAmazon\, $14.95 Kindle\, $19.95 paperback\n\n\n\nBarnes and Noble\, $14.95 eBook\, $19.95 paperback\n\n\n\nCathedral Book Store (Atlanta)\, $14.95 paperback\n\n\n\nKobo\, $13.99 eBook\n\n\n\n\nAdults should read the book to inform our discussion\, according to the guide below. It is not necessary for children to have read the book or have had it read to them. \n\n\n\nClass DaysChapters from Proclaim!TopicOctober 15Chapters 1-2Why are we here?October 22Chapters 3-4GatherOctober 29Chapter 5Proclaim and Respond to the WordNovember 5Chapters 6-7Pray and Exchange PeaceNovember 12Chapters 8PrepareNovember 19Chapters 9-10Make and Break BreadNovember 26Chapter 11Conclusion: Share and Go Forth\n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to participate in this class\, including those without a church home. There is no charge to attend the class. \n\n\n\nProclaim!\n\n\n\nA fresh perspective on how liturgy can support social justice work. Proclaim! is an exploration of Episcopal liturgy from a black\, queer\, millennial perspective\, with an eye toward proclamation and justice. Part memoir\, part history\, part biblical studies\, and part practical theology\, Proclaim! suggests that the politics of our liturgical tradition is the ground from which we can engage in the justice work that our world needs. \n\n\n\nEach chapter explores theology\, a biblical story\, and the real-world practice of evangelism and mission. The liturgy can serve as the theological well from which we might draw wisdom to engage the issues of justice\, equity\, and compassion in the world today. The question is not whether or not to engage politics; rather\, the question is: whose politics are being reflected? \n\n\n\nFurthermore\, what shape might our lives take if we took our worship of God seriously? People who are curious about what justice looks like in the Church or who are seeking new resources to sustain their work will be affirmed in Halley’s book.

SUMMARY:In-person and on-line Holy Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome at Church of the Redeemer. We look forward to seeing you at this 10:30 am service of Holy Eucharist at Church of the Redeemer. It is in-person and on-line. \n\n\n\nWhile not required\, you may wear a mask when in the building. We have masks available for you\, if you want. \n\n\n\nThe service is broadcast live on the Welcome page of this website. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Cor 11:23-26; Mk 14:22-25; Mt 26:26-29; Lk 22:14-20).
