SUMMARY:The Sunday of the Resurrection\, or Easter Day (Year B)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nO God\, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross\, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin\, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and for ever. Amen. \n\n\n\nor this \n\n\n\nO God\, who made this most holy night to shine with the glory of the Lord’s resurrection: Stir up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism\, that we\, being renewed both in body and mind\, may worship you in sincerity and truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you\, in the unity of the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and for ever. Amen. \n\n\n\nor this \n\n\n\nAlmighty God\, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we\, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord’s resurrection\, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and for ever. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel\, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea\, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil\, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear\, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses\, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” \n\n\n\nPsalm 118:1-2\, 14-24 (BCP)\n\n\n\nConfitemini Domino \n\n\n\n1 Give thanks to the Lord\, for he is good; *    his mercy endures for ever.2 Let Israel now proclaim\, *     “His mercy endures for ever.”14 The Lord is my strength and my song\, *    and he has become my salvation.15 There is a sound of exultation and victory *    in the tents of the righteous:16 “The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! *    the right hand of the Lord is exalted! the right hand of the Lord has triumphed!”17 I shall not die\, but live\, *    and declare the works of the Lord.18 The Lord has punished me sorely\, *    but he did not hand me over to death.19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; *    I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the Lord.20 “This is the gate of the Lord; *    he who is righteous may enter.”21 I will give thanks to you\, for you answered me *    and have become my salvation.22 The same stone which the builders rejected *    has become the chief cornerstone.23 This is the Lord’s doing\, *    and it is marvelous in our eyes.24 On this day the Lord has acted; *    we will rejoice and be glad in it. \n\n\n\n1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nNow I would remind you\, brothers and sisters\, of the good news that I proclaimed to you\, which you in turn received\, in which also you stand\, through which also you are being saved\, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures\, and that he was buried\, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures\, and that he appeared to Cephas\, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time\, most of whom are still alive\, though some have died. Then he appeared to James\, then to all the apostles. Last of all\, as to one untimely born\, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles\, unfit to be called an apostle\, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am\, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary\, I worked harder than any of them—though it was not I\, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they\, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. \n\n\n\nEither John 20:1-18 or Mark 16:1-8\n\n\n\nJohn 20:1-18 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nEarly on the first day of the week\, while it was still dark\, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple\, the one whom Jesus loved\, and said to them\, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb\, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together\, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there\, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came\, following him\, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there\, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head\, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple\, who reached the tomb first\, also went in\, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture\, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. \n\n\n\nBut Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept\, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white\, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying\, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her\, “Woman\, why are you weeping?” She said to them\, “They have taken away my Lord\, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this\, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there\, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her\, “Woman\, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener\, she said to him\, “Sir\, if you have carried him away\, tell me where you have laid him\, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her\, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew\, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her\, “Do not hold on to me\, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them\, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father\, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples\, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. \n\n\n\nMark 16:1-8 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nWhen the sabbath was over\, Mary Magdalene\, and Mary the mother of James\, and Salome bought spices\, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week\, when the sun had risen\, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another\, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up\, they saw that the stone\, which was very large\, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb\, they saw a young man\, dressed in a white robe\, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them\, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth\, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look\, there is the place they laid him. But go\, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him\, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb\, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone\, for they were afraid. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:The 2nd Sunday of Easter (Year B)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nAlmighty and everlasting God\, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ’s Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, for ever and ever. Biden\, Jr\, President of the United StatesKamala Harris\, Vice President of the United States \n\n\n\nJay Inslee\, Governor of Washington \n\n\n\nTeri Gobin\, Chair of the TulalipCecile Hanson\, Chair of the DuwamishFawn Sharp\, President of the National Congress of American Indians \n\n\n\nLessons\n\n\n\nLessons appointed for use for this day from the Revised Common Lectionary (Episcopal version). \n\n\n\nActs 4:32-35 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nNow the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul\, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions\, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus\, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them\, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles’ feet\, and it was distributed to each as any had need. \n\n\n\nPsalm 133 (BCP)\n\n\n\nEcce\, quam bonum! \n\n\n\n1 Oh\, how good and pleasant it is\, *    when brethren live together in unity!2 It is like fine oil upon the head *    that runs down upon the beard\,3 Upon the beard of Aaron\, *    and runs down upon the collar of his robe.4 It is like the dew of Hermon *    that falls upon the hills of Zion.5 For there the Lord has ordained the blessing: *    life for evermore. \n\n\n\n1 John 1:1—2:2 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nWe declare to you what was from the beginning\, what we have heard\, what we have seen with our eyes\, what we have looked at and touched with our hands\, concerning the word of life—this life was revealed\, and we have seen it and testify to it\, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us—we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you\, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness\, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light\, we have fellowship with one another\, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin\, we deceive ourselves\, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins\, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned\, we make him a liar\, and his word is not in us. My little children\, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin\, we have an advocate with the Father\, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins\, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. \n\n\n\nJohn 20:19-31 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nWhen it was evening on that day\, the first day of the week\, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews\, Jesus came and stood among them and said\, “Peace be with you.” After he said this\, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again\, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me\, so I send you.” When he had said this\, he breathed on them and said to them\, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any\, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any\, they are retained.” But Thomas (who was called the Twin)\, one of the twelve\, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him\, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them\, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands\, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side\, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were again in the house\, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut\, Jesus came and stood among them and said\, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas\, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him\, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him\, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples\, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah\, the Son of God\, and that through believing you may have life in his name. The God of Abraham\, the God of Isaac\, and the God of Jacob\, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus\, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate\, though he had decided to release him. But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you\, and you killed the Author of life\, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And by faith in his name\, his name itself has made this man strong\, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you. And now\, friends\, I know that you acted in ignorance\, as did also your rulers. In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets\, that his Messiah would suffer. Repent therefore\, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out.” \n\n\n\nPsalm 4 (BCP)\n\n\n\nCum invocarem \n\n\n\n1 Answer me when I call\, O God\, defender of my cause; *    you set me free when I am hard-pressed; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.2 “You mortals\, how long will you dishonor my glory; *    how long will you worship dumb idols and run after false gods?”3 Know that the Lord does wonders for the faithful; *    when I call upon the Lord\, he will hear me.4 Tremble\, then\, and do not sin; *    speak to your heart in silence upon your bed.5 Offer the appointed sacrifices *    and put your trust in the Lord.6 Many are saying\, “Oh\, that we might see better times!” *    Lift up the light of your countenance upon us\, O Lord.7 You have put gladness in my heart\, *    more than when grain and wine and oil increase.8 I lie down in peace; at once I fall asleep; *    for only you\, Lord\, make me dwell in safety. \n\n\n\n1 John 3:1-7 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nSee what love the Father has given us\, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved\, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed\, we will be like him\, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves\, just as he is pure. Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed to take away sins\, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. Little children\, let no one deceive you. Everyone who does what is right is righteous\, just as he is righteous. \n\n\n\nLuke 24:36b-48 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus stood among the disciples and said to them\, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and terrified\, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. He said to them\, “Why are you frightened\, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this\, he showed them his hands and his feet. While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering\, he said to them\, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish\, and he took it and ate in their presence. Then he said to them\, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses\, the prophets\, and the psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures\, and he said to them\, “Thus it is written\, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day\, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations\, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:The 4th Sunday of Easter (Year B)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nO God\, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name\, and follow where he leads; who\, with you and the Holy Spirit\, lives and reigns\, one God\, for ever and ever. When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst\, they inquired\, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” Then Peter\, filled with the Holy Spirit\, said to them\, “Rulers of the people and elders\, if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed\, let it be known to all of you\, and to all the people of Israel\, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth\, whom you crucified\, whom God raised from the dead. This Jesus is ‘the stone that was rejected by you\, the builders; it has become the cornerstone.’ There is salvation in no one else\, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.” \n\n\n\nPsalm 23 (BCP)\n\n\n\nDominus regit me \n\n\n\n1 The Lord is my shepherd; *    I shall not be in want.2 He makes me lie down in green pastures *    and leads me beside still waters.3 He revives my soul *    and guides me along right pathways for his Name’s sake.4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death\, I shall fear no evil; *    for you are with me; your rod and your staff\, they comfort me.5 You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; *    you have anointed my head with oil\, and my cup is running over.6 Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life\, *    and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. \n\n\n\n1 John 3:16-24 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nWe know love by this\, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? Little children\, let us love\, not in word or speech\, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts\, and he knows everything. Beloved\, if our hearts do not condemn us\, we have boldness before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask\, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment\, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another\, just as he has commanded us. All who obey his commandments abide in him\, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us\, by the Spirit that he has given us. \n\n\n\nJohn 10:11-18 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus said\, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand\, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep\, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me\, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also\, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock\, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me\, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me\, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down\, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:The 5th Sunday of Easter (Year B)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nAlmighty God\, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way\, the truth\, and the life\, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you\, in the unity of the Holy Spirit\, one God\, for ever and ever. So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch\, a court official of Candace\, queen of the Ethiopians\, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot\, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip\, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked\, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied\, “How can I\, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter\, and like a lamb silent before its shearer\, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip\, “About whom\, may I ask you\, does the prophet say this\, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip began to speak\, and starting with this scripture\, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road\, they came to some water; and the eunuch said\, “Look\, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” He commanded the chariot to stop\, and both of them\, Philip and the eunuch\, went down into the water\, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water\, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more\, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus\, and as he was passing through the region\, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. \n\n\n\nPsalm 22:24-30 (BCP)\n\n\n\nNarrabo nomen tuum fratribus \n\n\n\n24 My praise is of him in the great assembly; *    I will perform my vows in the presence of those who worship him.25 The poor shall eat and be satisfied\, and those who seek the Lord shall praise him: *    “May your heart live for ever!”26 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord\, *    and all the families of the nations shall bow before him.27 For kingship belongs to the Lord; *    he rules over the nations.28 To him alone all who sleep in the earth bow down in worship; *    all who go down to the dust fall before him.29 My soul shall live for him; my descendants shall serve him; *they shall be known as the Lord’s for ever.30 They shall come and make known to a people yet unborn *    the saving deeds that he has done. \n\n\n\n1 John 4:7-21 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nBeloved\, let us love one another\, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God\, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love\, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved\, since God loved us so much\, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another\, God lives in us\, and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us\, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God\, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love\, and those who abide in love abide in God\, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment\, because as he is\, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love\, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment\, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say\, “I love God\,” and hate their brothers or sisters\, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen\, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also. \n\n\n\nJohn 15:1-8 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus said to his disciples\, “I am the true vine\, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine\, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine\, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit\, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered\, thrown into the fire\, and burned. If you abide in me\, and my words abide in you\, ask for whatever you wish\, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this\, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:The 6th Sunday of Easter (Year B): Rogation Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nO God\, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you\, that we\, loving you in all things and above all things\, may obtain your promises\, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, for ever and ever. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles\, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said\, “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. \n\n\n\nPsalm 98 (BCP)\n\n\n\nCantate Domino \n\n\n\n1 Sing to the Lord a new song\, *    for he has done marvelous things.2 With his right hand and his holy arm *    has he won for himself the victory.3 The Lord has made known his victory; *    his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations.4 He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel\, *    and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.5 Shout with joy to the Lord\, all you lands; *    lift up your voice\, rejoice\, and sing.6 Sing to the Lord with the harp\, *    with the harp and the voice of song.7 With trumpets and the sound of the horn *    shout with joy before the King\, the Lord.8 Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it\, *    the lands and those who dwell therein.9 Let the rivers clap their hands\, *    and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord\, when he comes to judge the earth.10 In righteousness shall he judge the world *    and the peoples with equity. \n\n\n\n1 John 5:1-6 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nEveryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God\, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God\, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this\, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome\, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world\, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood\, Jesus Christ\, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies\, for the Spirit is the truth. \n\n\n\nJohn 15:9-17 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus said to his disciples\, “As the Father has loved me\, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments\, you will abide in my love\, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you\, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment\, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this\, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer\, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends\, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit\, fruit that will last\, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us\, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.” So they proposed two\, Joseph called Barsabbas\, who was also known as Justus\, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said\, “Lord\, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them\, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. \n\n\n\nPsalm 1 (BCP)\n\n\n\nBeatus vir qui non abiit \n\n\n\n1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked\, *    nor lingered in the way of sinners\, nor sat in the seats of the scornful!2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord\, *    and they meditate on his law day and night.3 They are like trees planted by streams of water\, bearing fruit in due season\, with leaves that do not wither; *    everything they do shall prosper.4 It is not so with the wicked; *    they are like chaff which the wind blows away.5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes\, *    nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous\, *    but the way of the wicked is doomed. \n\n\n\n1 John 5:9-13 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nIf we receive human testimony\, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life\, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God\, so that you may know that you have eternal life. \n\n\n\nJohn 17:6-19 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus prayed for his disciples saying\, “I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours\, and you gave them to me\, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them\, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world\, but on behalf of those whom you gave me\, because they are yours. All mine are yours\, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world\, but they are in the world\, and I am coming to you. Holy Father\, protect them in your name that you have given me\, so that they may be one\, as we are one. While I was with them\, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them\, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost\, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you\, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word\, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world\, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world\, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world\, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world\, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself\, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday (Year B)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nAlmighty God\, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel\, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you\, in the unity of the Holy Spirit\, one God\, for ever and ever. Amen. \n\n\n\nor this \n\n\n\nO God\, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things\, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you\, in the unity of the Holy Spirit\, one God\, for ever and ever. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind\, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues\, as of fire\, appeared among them\, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages\, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered\, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished\, they asked\, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear\, each of us\, in our own native language? Parthians\, Medes\, Elamites\, and residents of Mesopotamia\, Judea and Cappadocia\, Pontus and Asia\, Phrygia and Pamphylia\, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene\, and visitors from Rome\, both Jews and proselytes\, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed\, saying to one another\, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said\, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter\, standing with the eleven\, raised his voice and addressed them\, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem\, let this be known to you\, and listen to what I say. Indeed\, these are not drunk\, as you suppose\, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No\, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:‘In the last days it will be\, God declares\,that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh\,    and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy\,and your young men shall see visions\,    and your old men shall dream dreams.Even upon my slaves\, both men and women\,    in those days I will pour out my Spirit;    and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above    and signs on the earth below\,    blood\, and fire\, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness    and the moon to blood\,    before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” \n\n\n\nPsalm 104:25-35\, 37 (BCP)\n\n\n\nQuam multa sunt opera \n\n\n\n25 O Lord\, how manifold are your works! *    in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number\, *    creatures both small and great.27 There move the ships\, and there is that Leviathan\, *    which you have made for the sport of it.28 All of them look to you *    to give them their food in due season.29 You give it to them; they gather it; *    you open your hand\, and they are filled with good things.30 You hide your face\, and they are terrified; *    you take away their breath\, and they die and return to their dust.31 You send forth your Spirit\, and they are created; *    and so you renew the face of the earth.32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; *    may the Lord rejoice in all his works.33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; *    he touches the mountains and they smoke.34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; *    I will praise my God while I have my being.35 May these words of mine please him; *    I will rejoice in the Lord.37 Bless the Lord\, O my soul. *    Hallelujah! \n\n\n\nRomans 8:22-27 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nWe know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation\, but we ourselves\, who have the first fruits of the Spirit\, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption\, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see\, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought\, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God\, who searches the heart\, knows what is the mind of the Spirit\, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. \n\n\n\nJohn 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus said to his disciples\, “When the Advocate comes\, whom I will send to you from the Father\, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father\, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. I did not say these things to you from the beginning\, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me\, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you\, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away\, for if I do not go away\, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go\, I will send him to you. And when he comes\, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin\, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness\, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment\, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. I still have many things to say to you\, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes\, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own\, but will speak whatever he hears\, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me\, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:The Sunday of the Resurrection\, or Easter Day (Year C)
\n\n\n\n1 Corinthians 15:19-26 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nIf for this life only we have hoped in Christ\, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead\, the first fruits of those who have died. For since death came through a human being\, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; for as all die in Adam\, so all will be made alive in Christ. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits\, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end\, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father\, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. \n\n\n\nLesson from the Gospels\n\n\n\nOne of the following is used. \n\n\n\nJohn 20:1-18 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nEarly on the first day of the week\, while it was still dark\, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. \n\n\n\nLuke 24:1-12 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nBut on the first day of the week\, at early dawn\, they came to the tomb\, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb\, but when they went in\, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this\, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground\, but the men said to them\, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here\, but has risen. Remember how he told you\, while he was still in Galilee\, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners\, and be crucified\, and on the third day rise again.” Then they remembered his words\, and returning from the tomb\, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene\, Joanna\, Mary the mother of James\, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. But these words seemed to them an idle tale\, and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in\, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home\, amazed at what had happened. SUMMARY:2nd Sunday of Easter (Year C)
The high priest questioned them\, saying\, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name\, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you are determined to bring this man’s blood on us.” But Peter and the apostles answered\, “We must obey God rather than any human authority. The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus\, whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior that he might give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things\, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.” \n\n\n\nPsalm 118:14-29 (BCP)\n\n\n\nFortitudo mea et laus mea Dominus \n\n\n\n14          The Lord is my strength and my song\, *and he has become my salvation.  \n\n\n\n15          There is a sound of exultation and victory *in the tents of the righteous: \n\n\n\n16          “The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! *the right hand of the Lord is exalted!the right hand of the Lord has triumphed!” \n\n\n\n17          I shall not die\, but live\, *and declare the works of the Lord. \n\n\n\n18          The Lord has punished me sorely\, *but he did not hand me over to death. \n\n\n\n19          Open for me the gates of righteousness; *I will enter them;I will offer thanks to the Lord. \n\n\n\n20          “This is the gate of the Lord; *he who is righteous may enter.” \n\n\n\n21          I will give thanks to you\, for you answered me *and have become my salvation. \n\n\n\n22          The same stone which the builders rejected *has become the chief cornerstone. \n\n\n\n23          This is the Lord’s doing\, *and it is marvelous in our eyes. \n\n\n\n24          On this day the Lord has acted; *we will rejoice and be glad in it. \n\n\n\n25          Hosannah\, Lord\, hosannah! *Lord\, send us now success. \n\n\n\n26          Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; *we bless you from the house of the Lord. \n\n\n\n27          God is the Lord; he has shined upon us; *form a procession with branches up to the horns of the altar. \n\n\n\n28          “You are my God\, and I will thank you; *you are my God\, and I will exalt you.” \n\n\n\n29          Give thanks to the Lord\, for he is good; *his mercy endures for ever. \n\n\n\nRevelation 1:4-8 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJohn to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come\, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne\, and from Jesus Christ\, the faithful witness\, the firstborn of the dead\, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood\, and made us to be a kingdom\, priests serving his God and Father\, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him\, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega\,” says the Lord God\, who is and who was and who is to come\, the Almighty. SUMMARY:3rd Sunday of Easter (Year C)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nO God\, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith\, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you\, in the unity of the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and for ever. Trump\, President of the United StatesRobert Ferguson\, Governor of WashingtonTeri Gobin\, Chair of the Tulalip TribesCecile Hanson\, Chair of the Duwamish Nation \n\n\n\nLessons\n\n\n\nLessons appointed for use for this day from the Revised Common Lectionary (Episcopal version). \n\n\n\nActs 9:1-6(7-20) (NRSV)\n\n\n\nSaul\, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord\, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus\, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way\, men or women\, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus\, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him\, “Saul\, Saul\, why do you persecute me?” He asked\, “Who are you\, Lord?” The reply came\, “I am Jesus\, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city\, and you will be told what you are to do.”[The men who were traveling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no one. Saul got up from the ground\, and though his eyes were open\, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. For three days he was without sight\, and neither ate nor drank. Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision\, “Ananias.” He answered\, “Here I am\, Lord.” The Lord said to him\, “Get up and go to the street called Straight\, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying\, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” But Ananias answered\, “Lord\, I have heard from many about this man\, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.” But the Lord said to him\, “Go\, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel; I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said\, “Brother Saul\, the Lord Jesus\, who appeared to you on your way here\, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes\, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized\, and after taking some food\, he regained his strength. For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus\, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues\, saying\, “He is the Son of God.”] \n\n\n\nPsalm 30\n\n\n\nExaltabo te\, Domine \n\n\n\n1            I will exalt you\, O Lord\,because you have lifted me up *and have not let my enemies triumph over me. \n\n\n\n2            O Lord my God\, I cried out to you\, *and you restored me to health. \n\n\n\n3            You brought me up\, O Lord\, from the dead; *you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. \n\n\n\n4            Sing to the Lord\, you servants of his; *give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness. \n\n\n\n5            For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye\, *his favor for a lifetime. \n\n\n\n6            Weeping may spend the night\, *but joy comes in the morning. \n\n\n\n7            While I felt secure\, I said\,“I shall never be disturbed. *You\, Lord\, with your favor\, made me as strong as the mountains.” \n\n\n\n8            Then you hid your face\, *and I was filled with fear. \n\n\n\n9            I cried to you\, O Lord; *I pleaded with the Lord\, saying\, \n\n\n\n10          “What profit is there in my blood\, if I go down to the Pit? *will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness? \n\n\n\n11          Hear\, O Lord\, and have mercy upon me; *O Lord\, be my helper.” \n\n\n\n12          You have turned my wailing into dancing; *you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy. \n\n\n\n13          Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; *O Lord my God\, I will give you thanks for ever. \n\n\n\nRevelation 5:11-14 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nI looked\, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands\, singing with full voice\, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea\, and all that is in them\, singing\, “To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” And the four living creatures said\, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshiped. \n\n\n\nJohn 21:1-19 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter\, Thomas called the Twin\, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee\, the sons of Zebedee\, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them\, “I am going fishing.” They said to him\, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat\, but that night they caught nothing. Just after daybreak\, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them\, “Children\, you have no fish\, have you?” They answered him\, “No.” He said to them\, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat\, and you will find some.” So they cast it\, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter\, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord\, he put on some clothes\, for he was naked\, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat\, dragging the net full of fish\, for they were not far from the land\, only about a hundred yards off. When they had gone ashore\, they saw a charcoal fire there\, with fish on it\, and bread. Jesus said to them\, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore\, full of large fish\, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many\, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them\, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him\, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them\, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast\, Jesus said to Simon Peter\, “Simon son of John\, do you love me more than these?” He said to him\, “Yes\, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him\, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him\, “Simon son of John\, do you love me?” He said to him\, “Yes\, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him\, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time\, “Simon son of John\, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time\, “Do you love me?” And he said to him\, “Lord\, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him\, “Feed my sheep. Very truly\, I tell you\, when you were younger\, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old\, you will stretch out your hands\, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him\, “Follow me.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:4th Sunday of Easter (Year C)
She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her\, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa\, the disciples\, who heard that Peter was there\, sent two men to him with the request\, “Please come to us without delay.” So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived\, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him\, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside\, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said\, “Tabitha\, get up.” Then she opened her eyes\, and seeing Peter\, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows\, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa\, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon\, a tanner. \n\n\n\nPsalm 23 (BCP)\n\n\n\nDominus regit me \n\n\n\n1            The Lord is my shepherd; *I shall not be in want. \n\n\n\n2            He makes me lie down in green pastures *and leads me beside still waters. \n\n\n\n3            He revives my soul *and guides me along right pathways for his Name’s sake. \n\n\n\n4            Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death\,I shall fear no evil; *for you are with me;your rod and your staff\, they comfort me. \n\n\n\n5            You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; *you have anointed my head with oil\,and my cup is running over. \n\n\n\n6            Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life\, *and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. \n\n\n\nRevelation 7:9-17 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nI looked\, and there was a great multitude that no one could count\, from every nation\, from all tribes and peoples and languages\, standing before the throne and before the Lamb\, robed in white\, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice\, saying\, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne\, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures\, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God\, singing\, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” Then one of the elders addressed me\, saying\, “Who are these\, robed in white\, and where have they come from?” I said to him\, “Sir\, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me\, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God\, and worship him day and night within his temple\, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more\, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them\, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd\, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life\, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” \n\n\n\nJohn 10:22-30 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nAt that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter\, and Jesus was walking in the temple\, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him\, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah\, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered\, “I have told you\, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe\, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them\, and they follow me. I give them eternal life\, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else\, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:5th Sunday of Easter (Year C)
So when Peter went up to Jerusalem\, the circumcised believers criticized him\, saying\, “Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?” Then Peter began to explain it to them\, step by step\, saying\, “I was in the city of Joppa praying\, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven\, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals\, beasts of prey\, reptiles\, and birds of the air. I also heard a voice saying to me\, ‘Get up\, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I replied\, ‘By no means\, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But a second time the voice answered from heaven\, ‘What God has made clean\, you must not call profane.’ This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. At that very moment three men\, sent to me from Caesarea\, arrived at the house where we were. The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me\, and we entered the man’s house. He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying\, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon\, who is called Peter; he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.’ And as I began to speak\, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord\, how he had said\, ‘John baptized with water\, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ\, who was I that I could hinder God?” When they heard this\, they were silenced. And they praised God\, saying\, “Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life.” \n\n\n\nPsalm 148 (BCP)\n\n\n\nLaudate Dominum \n\n\n\n1            Hallelujah!Praise the Lord from the heavens; *praise him in the heights. \n\n\n\n2            Praise him\, all you angels of his; *praise him\, all his host. \n\n\n\n3            Praise him\, sun and moon; *praise him\, all you shining stars. \n\n\n\n4            Praise him\, heaven of heavens\, *and you waters above the heavens. \n\n\n\n5            Let them praise the Name of the Lord; *for he commanded\, and they were created. \n\n\n\n6            He made them stand fast for ever and ever; *he gave them a law which shall not pass away. \n\n\n\n7            Praise the Lord from the earth\, *you sea-monsters and all deeps; \n\n\n\n8            Fire and hail\, snow and fog\, *tempestuous wind\, doing his will; \n\n\n\n9            Mountains and all hills\, *fruit trees and all cedars; \n\n\n\n10          Wild beasts and all cattle\, *creeping things and winged birds; \n\n\n\n11          Kings of the earth and all peoples\, *princes and all rulers of the world; \n\n\n\n12          Young men and maidens\, *old and young together. \n\n\n\n13          Let them praise the Name of the Lord\, *for his Name only is exalted\,his splendor is over earth and heaven. \n\n\n\n14          He has raised up strength for his peopleand praise for all his loyal servants\, *the children of Israel\, a people who are near him.Hallelujah! \n\n\n\nRevelation 21:1-6 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nI saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away\, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city\, the new Jerusalem\, coming down out of heaven from God\, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying\, “See\, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples\, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more\, for the first things have passed away.” And the one who was seated on the throne said\, “See\, I am making all things new.” Also he said\, “Write this\, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Then he said to me\, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega\, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.” \n\n\n\nJohn 13:31-35 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nAt the last supper\, when Judas had gone out\, Jesus said\, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified\, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him\, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children\, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you\, ‘Where I am going\, you cannot come.’ I give you a new commandment\, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you\, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples\, if you have love for one another.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace\, the following day to Neapolis\, and from there to Philippi\, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river\, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. A certain woman named Lydia\, a worshiper of God\, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. When she and her household were baptized\, she urged us\, saying\, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord\, come and stay at my home.” And she prevailed upon us. \n\n\n\nPsalm 67 (BCP)\n\n\n\nDeus misereatur \n\n\n\n1            May God be merciful to us and bless us\, *show us the light of his countenance and come to us. \n\n\n\n2            Let your ways be known upon earth\, *your saving health among all nations. \n\n\n\n3            Let the peoples praise you\, O God; *let all the peoples praise you. \n\n\n\n4            Let the nations be glad and sing for joy\, *for you judge the peoples with equityand guide all the nations upon earth. \n\n\n\n5            Let the peoples praise you\, O God; *let all the peoples praise you. \n\n\n\n6            The earth has brought forth her increase; *may God\, our own God\, give us his blessing. \n\n\n\n7            May God give us his blessing\, *and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him. \n\n\n\nRevelation 21:10\, 22—22:5 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nIn the spirit the angel carried me away to a great\, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. I saw no temple in the city\, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it\, for the glory of God is its light\, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light\, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will enter it\, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood\, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life\, bright as crystal\, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit\, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it\, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face\, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun\, for the Lord God will be their light\, and they will reign forever and ever. \n\n\n\nJohn 14:23-29 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus said to Judas (not Iscariot)\, “Those who love me will keep my word\, and my Father will love them\, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine\, but is from the Father who sent me. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate\, the Holy Spirit\, whom the Father will send in my name\, will teach you everything\, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled\, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you\, ‘I am going away\, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me\, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father\, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs\, so that when it does occur\, you may believe.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nO God\, the King of glory\, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless\, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us\, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, in glory everlasting. While she followed Paul and us\, she would cry out\, “These men are slaves of the Most High God\, who proclaim to you a way of salvation.” She kept doing this for many days. But Paul\, very much annoyed\, turned and said to the spirit\, “I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone\, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities. When they had brought them before the magistrates\, they said\, “These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe.” The crowd joined in attacking them\, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. After they had given them a severe flogging\, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. Following these instructions\, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God\, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake\, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open\, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself\, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted in a loud voice\, “Do not harm yourself\, for we are all here.” The jailer called for lights\, and rushing in\, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them outside and said\, “Sirs\, what must I do to be saved?” They answered\, “Believe on the Lord Jesus\, and you will be saved\, you and your household.” They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God. \n\n\n\nPsalm 97\n\n\n\nDominus regnavit \n\n\n\n1 The Lord is King; let the earth rejoice; *let the multitude of the isles be glad. \n\n\n\n2 Clouds and darkness are round about him\, *righteousness and justice are the foundations of his throne. \n\n\n\n3 A fire goes before him *and burns up his enemies on every side. \n\n\n\n4 His lightnings light up the world; *the earth sees it and is afraid. \n\n\n\n5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord\, *at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. \n\n\n\n6 The heavens declare his righteousness\, *and all the peoples see his glory. \n\n\n\n7 Confounded be all who worship carved images and delight in false gods! *Bow down before him\, all you gods. \n\n\n\n8 Zion hears and is glad\, and the cities of Judah rejoice\, *because of your judgments\, O Lord. \n\n\n\n9 For you are the Lord\, most high over all the earth; *you are exalted far above all gods. \n\n\n\n10 The Lord loves those who hate evil; *he preserves the lives of his saints and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. \n\n\n\n11 Light has sprung up for the righteous\, *and joyful gladness for those who are truehearted. \n\n\n\n12 Rejoice in the Lord\, you righteous\, *and give thanks to his holy Name. \n\n\n\nRevelation 22:12-14\, 16-17\, 20-21 (NRSV)\n\n\n\n“See\, I am coming soon; my reward is with me\, to repay according to everyone’s work. I am the Alpha and the Omega\, the first and the last\, the beginning and the end.” Blessed are those who wash their robes\, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates. “It is I\, Jesus\, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David\, the bright morning star.” The Spirit and the bride say\, “Come.” And let everyone who hears say\, “Come.” And let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift. The one who testifies to these things says\, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come\, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen. \n\n\n\nJohn 17:20-26 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus prayed for his disciples\, and then he said\, “I ask not only on behalf of these\, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word\, that they may all be one. As you\, Father\, are in me and I am in you\, may they also be in us\, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them\, so that they may be one\, as we are one\, I in them and you in me\, that they may become completely one\, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father\, I desire that those also\, whom you have given me\, may be with me where I am\, to see my glory\, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father\, the world does not know you\, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. I made your name known to them\, and I will make it known\, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them\, and I in them.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:Day of Pentecost [Whitsunday] (Year C)
No\, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be\, God declares\, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh\, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy\, and your young men shall see visions\, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves\, both men and women\, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below\, blood\, and fire\, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood\, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” \n\n\n\nPsalm 104:25-35\, 37\n\n\n\nUsquequo\, Domine\, \n\n\n\n25 O Lord\, how manifold are your works! *in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. \n\n\n\n26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number\, *creatures both small and great. \n\n\n\n27There move the ships\, and there is that Leviathan\, *which you have made for the sport of it. \n\n\n\n28 All of them look to you *to give them their food in due season. \n\n\n\n29 You give it to them; they gather it; *you open your hand\, and they are filled with good things. \n\n\n\n30 You hide your face\, and they are terrified; *you take away their breath\, and they die and return to their dust. \n\n\n\n31 You send forth your Spirit\, and they are created; *and so you renew the face of the earth. \n\n\n\n32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; *may the Lord rejoice in all his works. \n\n\n\n33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; *he touches the mountains and they smoke. \n\n\n\n34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; *I will praise my God while I have my being. \n\n\n\n35 May these words of mine please him; *I will rejoice in the Lord. \n\n\n\n37 Bless the Lord\, O my soul. *Hallelujah! \n\n\n\nRomans 8:14-17 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nAll who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear\, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry\, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God\, and if children\, then heirs\, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if\, in fact\, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. \n\n\n\nJohn 14:8-17(25-27) (NRSV)\n\n\n\nPhilip said to Jesus\, “Lord\, show us the Father\, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him\, “Have I been with you all this time\, Philip\, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say\, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not\, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly\, I tell you\, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and\, in fact\, will do greater works than these\, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name\, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything\, I will do it. If you love me\, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father\, and he will give you another Advocate\, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth\, whom the world cannot receive\, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him\, because he abides with you\, and he will be in you.”[I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate\, the Holy Spirit\, whom the Father will send in my name\, will teach you everything\, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled\, and do not let them be afraid.] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:The Great Vigil of Easter (Year A)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nAlmighty God\, who for our redemption gave your only- begotten Son to the death of the cross\, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin\, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and for ever. Amen. \n\n\n\nLessons\n\n\n\nLessons appointed for use for this day from the Revised Common Lectionary (Episcopal version). \n\n\n\nThe Service of Lessons\n\n\n\nAt least two of the following Lessons are read\, of which one is always the Lesson from Exodus.  \n\n\n\nGenesis 1:1—2:4a (NRSV)\n\n\n\nIn the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth\, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep\, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said\, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day\, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning\, the first day. And God said\, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters\, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning\, the second day. And God said\, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place\, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth\, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said\, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed\, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind\, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning\, the third day. And God said\, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years\, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth\, to rule over the day and over the night\, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning\, the fourth day. And God said\, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures\, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves\, of every kind\, with which the waters swarm\, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them\, saying\, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas\, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning\, the fifth day. And God said\, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind\, and the cattle of every kind\, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said\, “Let us make humankind in our image\, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea\, and over the birds of the air\, and over the cattle\, and over all the wild animals of the earth\, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” So God created humankind in his image\, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them\, and God said to them\, “Be fruitful and multiply\, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” God said\, “See\, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth\, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth\, and to every bird of the air\, and to everything that creeps on the earth\, everything that has the breath of life\, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. God saw everything that he had made\, and indeed\, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning\, the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished\, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done\, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it\, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. \n\n\n\n\nPsalm 136:1-9\,23-26\n\n\n\n\nGenesis 7:1-5\, 11-18; 8:6-18; 9:8-13 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nThe Lord said to Noah\, “Go into the ark\, you and all your household\, for I have seen that you alone are righteous before me in this generation. Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals\, the male and its mate; and a pair of the animals that are not clean\, the male and its mate; and seven pairs of the birds of the air also\, male and female\, to keep their kind alive on the face of all the earth. For in seven days I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights; and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.” And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded him. In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life\, in the second month\, on the seventeenth day of the month\, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth\, and the windows of the heavens were opened. The rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights. On the very same day Noah with his sons\, Shem and Ham and Japheth\, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons entered the ark\, they and every wild animal of every kind\, and all domestic animals of every kind\, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth\, and every bird of every kind—every bird\, every winged creature. They went into the ark with Noah\, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. And those that entered\, male and female of all flesh\, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in. The flood continued forty days on the earth; and the waters increased\, and bore up the ark\, and it rose high above the earth. The waters swelled and increased greatly on the earth; and the ark floated on the face of the waters. At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made and sent out the raven; and it went to and fro until the waters were dried up from the earth. Then he sent out the dove from him\, to see if the waters had subsided from the face of the ground; but the dove found no place to set its foot\, and it returned to him to the ark\, for the waters were still on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took it and brought it into the ark with him. He waited another seven days\, and again he sent out the dove from the ark; and the dove came back to him in the evening\, and there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf; so Noah knew that the waters had subsided from the earth. Then he waited another seven days\, and sent out the dove; and it did not return to him any more. In the six hundred first year\, in the first month\, the first day of the month\, the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark\, and looked\, and saw that the face of the ground was drying. In the second month\, on the twenty-seventh day of the month\, the earth was dry. Then God said to Noah\, “Go out of the ark\, you and your wife\, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—so that they may abound on the earth\, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” So Noah went out with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives. Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him\, “As for me\, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you\, and with every living creature that is with you\, the birds\, the domestic animals\, and every animal of the earth with you\, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you\, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood\, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” God said\, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you\, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds\, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” \n\n\n\n\nPsalm 46\n\n\n\n\nGenesis 22:1-18 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nGod tested Abraham. He said to him\, “Abraham!” And he said\, “Here I am.” He said\, “Take your son\, your only son Isaac\, whom you love\, and go to the land of Moriah\, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning\, saddled his donkey\, and took two of his young men with him\, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the burnt offering\, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God had shown him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. Then Abraham said to his young men\, “Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship\, and then we will come back to you.” Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac\, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. Isaac said to his father Abraham\, “Father!” And he said\, “Here I am\, my son.” He said\, “The fire and the wood are here\, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said\, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering\, my son.” So the two of them walked on together. When they came to the place that God had shown him\, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac\, and laid him on the altar\, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven\, and said\, “Abraham\, Abraham!” And he said\, “Here I am.” He said\, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God\, since you have not withheld your son\, your only son\, from me.” And Abraham looked up and saw a ram\, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day\, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” The angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven\, and said\, “By myself I have sworn\, says the Lord: Because you have done this\, and have not withheld your son\, your only son\, I will indeed bless you\, and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies\, and by your offspring shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing for themselves\, because you have obeyed my voice.” \n\n\n\n\nPsalm 16\n\n\n\n\nExodus 14:10-31; 15:20-21 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nAs Pharaoh drew near\, the Israelites looked back\, and there were the Egyptians advancing on them. In great fear the Israelites cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses\, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us\, bringing us out of Egypt? Is this not the very thing we told you in Egypt\, ‘Let us alone and let us serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” But Moses said to the people\, “Do not be afraid\, stand firm\, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you\, and you have only to keep still.” Then the Lord said to Moses\, “Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. But you lift up your staff\, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it\, that the Israelites may go into the sea on dry ground. Then I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and so I will gain glory for myself over Pharaoh and all his army\, his chariots\, and his chariot drivers. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord\, when I have gained glory for myself over Pharaoh\, his chariots\, and his chariot drivers.” The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them. It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel. And so the cloud was there with the darkness\, and it lit up the night; one did not come near the other all night. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night\, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were divided. The Israelites went into the sea on dry ground\, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. The Egyptians pursued\, and went into the sea after them\, all of Pharaoh’s horses\, chariots\, and chariot drivers. At the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the Egyptian army\, and threw the Egyptian army into panic. He clogged their chariot wheels so that they turned with difficulty. The Egyptians said\, “Let us flee from the Israelites\, for the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.” Then the Lord said to Moses\, “Stretch out your hand over the sea\, so that the water may come back upon the Egyptians\, upon their chariots and chariot drivers.” So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea\, and at dawn the sea returned to its normal depth. As the Egyptians fled before it\, the Lord tossed the Egyptians into the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the chariot drivers\, the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea; not one of them remained. But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the sea\, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Israel saw the great work that the Lord did against the Egyptians. So the people feared the Lord and believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. Then the prophet Miriam\, Aaron’s sister\, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord\, for he has triumphed gloriously; horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.” \n\n\n\n\nCanticle 8 (The Song of Moses\, Exodus 15:1-6\, 11-13\, 17-18)\n\n\n\n\nIsaiah 55:1-11 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nHo\, everyone who thirsts\, come to the waters; and you that have no money\, come\, buy and eat! Come\, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread\, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me\, and eat what is good\, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear\, and come to me; listen\, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant\, my steadfast\, sure love for David. See\, I made him a witness to the peoples\, a leader and commander for the peoples. See\, you shall call nations that you do not know\, and nations that do not know you shall run to you\, because of the Lord your God\, the Holy One of Israel\, for he has glorified you. Seek the Lord while he may be found\, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way\, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord\, that he may have mercy on them\, and to our God\, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts\, nor are your ways my ways\, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth\, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven\, and do not return there until they have watered the earth\, making it bring forth and sprout\, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater\, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty\, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose\, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. \n\n\n\n\nCanticle 9 (The First Song of Isaiah\, Isaiah 12:2-6)\n\n\n\n\nBaruch 3:9-15\, 32—4:4 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nOr Proverbs 8:1-8\, 19-21; 9:4b-6 \n\n\n\nHear the commandments of life\, O Israel; give ear\, and learn wisdom! Why is it\, O Israel\, why is it that you are in the land of your enemies\, that you are growing old in a foreign country\, that you are defiled with the dead\, that you are counted among those in Hades? You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom. If you had walked in the way of God\, you would be living in peace forever. Learn where there is wisdom\, where there is strength\, where there is understanding\, so that you may at the same time discern where there is length of days\, and life\, where there is light for the eyes\, and peace. Who has found her place? And who has entered her storehouses? But the one who knows all things knows her\, he found her by his understanding. The one who prepared the earth for all time filled it with four-footed creatures; the one who sends forth the light\, and it goes; he called it\, and it obeyed him\, trembling; the stars shone in their watches\, and were glad; he called them\, and they said\, “Here we are!” They shone with gladness for him who made them. This is our God; no other can be compared to him. He found the whole way to knowledge\, and gave her to his servant Jacob and to Israel\, whom he loved. Afterward she appeared on earth and lived with humankind. She is the book of the commandments of God\, the law that endures forever. All who hold her fast will live\, and those who forsake her will die. Turn\, O Jacob\, and take her; walk toward the shining of her light. Do not give your glory to another\, or your advantages to an alien people. Happy are we\, O Israel\, for we know what is pleasing to God. \n\n\n\n\nPsalm 19\n\n\n\n\nProverbs 8:1-8\, 19-21; 9:4b-6 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nOr Baruch 3:9-15\, 32—4:4 (NRSV) \n\n\n\nDoes not wisdom call\, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights\, beside the way\, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town\, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: “To you\, O people\, I call\, and my cry is to all that live. O simple ones\, learn prudence; acquire intelligence\, you who lack it. Hear\, for I will speak noble things\, and from my lips will come what is right; for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. My fruit is better than gold\, even fine gold\, and my yield than choice silver. I walk in the way of righteousness\, along the paths of justice\, endowing with wealth those who love me\, and filling their treasuries.” To those without sense she says\, “Come\, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Lay aside immaturity\, and live\, and walk in the way of insight.” \n\n\n\n\nPsalm 19\n\n\n\n\nEzekiel 36:24-28 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nI will take you from the nations\, and gather you from all the countries\, and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water upon you\, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses\, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. A new heart I will give you\, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you\, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances. Then you shall live in the land that I gave to your ancestors; and you shall be my people\, and I will be your God. \n\n\n\n\nPsalm 42 and 43\n\n\n\n\nEzekiel 37:1-14\n\n\n\nThe hand of the Lord came upon me\, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley\, and they were very dry. He said to me\, “Mortal\, can these bones live?” I answered\, “O Lord God\, you know.” Then he said to me\, “Prophesy to these bones\, and say to them: O dry bones\, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you\, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you\, and will cause flesh to come upon you\, and cover you with skin\, and put breath in you\, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.” So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied\, suddenly there was a noise\, a rattling\, and the bones came together\, bone to its bone. I looked\, and there were sinews on them\, and flesh had come upon them\, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me\, “Prophesy to the breath\, prophesy\, mortal\, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds\, O breath\, and breathe upon these slain\, that they may live.” I prophesied as he commanded me\, and the breath came into them\, and they lived\, and stood on their feet\, a vast multitude. Then he said to me\, “Mortal\, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say\, ‘Our bones are dried up\, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’ Therefore prophesy\, and say to them\, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves\, and bring you up from your graves\, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord\, when I open your graves\, and bring you up from your graves\, O my people. I will put my spirit within you\, and you shall live\, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I\, the Lord\, have spoken and will act\,” says the Lord. \n\n\n\n\nPsalm 143\n\n\n\n\nZephaniah 3:14-20 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nSing aloud\, O daughter Zion; shout\, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart\, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgments against you\, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel\, the Lord\, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear\, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord\, your God\, is in your midst\, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness\, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you\, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast\, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home\, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth\, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes\, says the Lord. \n\n\n\n\nPsalm 98\n\n\n\n\nAt the Eucharist\n\n\n\nRomans 6:3-11 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nDo you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death\, so that\, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father\, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his\, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed\, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ\, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ\, being raised from the dead\, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died\, he died to sin\, once for all; but the life he lives\, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. \n\n\n\nPsalm 114 (BCP)\n\n\n\nIn exitu Israel \n\n\n\n1 Hallelujah!  When Israel came out of Egypt\, *       the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech\,2 Judah became God’s sanctuary *       and Israel his dominion.3 The sea beheld it and fled; *       Jordan turned and went back.4 The mountains skipped like rams\, *       and the little hills like young sheep.5 What ailed you\, O sea\, that you fled? *       O Jordan\, that you turned back?6 You mountains\, that you skipped like rams? *       you little hills like young sheep?7 Tremble\, O earth\, at the presence of the Lord\, *       at the presence of the God of Jacob\,8 Who turned the hard rock into a pool of water *      and flint-stone into a flowing spring. \n\n\n\nMatthew 28:1-10 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nAfter the sabbath\, as the first day of the week was dawning\, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord\, descending from heaven\, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning\, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women\, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised\, as he said. Come\, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples\, ‘He has been raised from the dead\, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ This is my message for you.” So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy\, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and said\, “Greetings!” And they came to him\, took hold of his feet\, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them\, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’ \n\n\n\nJeremiah 31:1-6 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nAt that time\, says the Lord\, I will be the God of all the families of Israel\, and they shall be my people. Thus says the Lord:The people who survived the sword   found grace in the wilderness;when Israel sought for rest\,   the Lord appeared to him from far away.I have loved you with an everlasting love;   therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.Again I will build you\, and you shall be built\,   O virgin Israel!Again you shall take your tambourines\,   and go forth in the dance of the merrymakers.Again you shall plant vineyards   on the mountains of Samaria;the planters shall plant\,   and shall enjoy the fruit. For there shall be a day when sentinels will call   in the hill country of Ephraim:‘Come\, let us go up to Zion\,   to the Lord our God.’ \n\n\n\nResponse\n\n\n\nPsalm 118:1-2\,14-24 (BCP)\n\n\n\nConfitemini Domino \n\n\n\nGive thanks to the Lord\, for he is good; *    his mercy endures for ever.Let Israel now proclaim\, *    “His mercy endures for ever.”The Lord is my strength and my song\, *    and he has become my salvation. There is a sound of exultation and victory *    in the tents of the righteous:“The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! *    the right hand of the Lord is exalted! the right hand of the Lord has triumphed!”I shall not die\, but live\, *    and declare the works of the Lord. The Lord has punished me sorely\, *    but he did not hand me over to death.Open for me the gates of righteousness; *    I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the LORD.“This is the gate of the Lord; *    he who is righteous may enter.”I will give thanks to you\, for you answered me *    and have become my salvation. The same stone which the builders rejected *    has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing\, *    and it is marvelous in our eyes.On this day the Lord has acted; *    we will rejoice and be glad in it. \n\n\n\nSecond Lesson\n\n\n\nOne of the following lessons. \n\n\n\nColossians 3:1-4 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nSo if you have been raised with Christ\, seek the things that are above\, where Christ is\, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above\, not on things that are on earth\, for you have died\, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed\, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. \n\n\n\nActs 10:34-43 (NRSV).\n\n\n\nThen Peter began to speak to them: ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality\, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’ \n\n\n\nGospel Lesson\n\n\n\nOne of the following. \n\n\n\nJohn 20:1-18 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nEarly on the first day of the week\, while it was still dark\, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple\, the one whom Jesus loved\, and said to them\, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb\, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept\, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white\, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying\, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her\, ‘Woman\, why are you weeping?’ She said to them\, ‘They have taken away my Lord\, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this\, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there\, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her\, ‘Woman\, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener\, she said to him\, ‘Sir\, if you have carried him away\, tell me where you have laid him\, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her\, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew\, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her\, ‘Do not hold on to me\, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them\, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father\, to my God and your God.” ’ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples\, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her. But God raised him up\, having freed him from death\, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. For David says concerning him\,“I saw the Lord always before me\,   for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken;therefore my heart was glad\, and my tongue rejoiced;   moreover\, my flesh will live in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades\,   or let your Holy One experience corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life;   you will make me full of gladness with your presence.”‘Fellow Israelites\, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried\, and his tomb is with us to this day. Since he was a prophet\, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. Foreseeing this\, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah\, saying\,“He was not abandoned to Hades\,   nor did his flesh experience corruption.”This Jesus God raised up\, and of that all of us are witnesses. \n\n\n\nPsalm 16 (BCP)\n\n\n\nConserva me\, Domine \n\n\n\nProtect me\, O God\, for I take refuge in you; *   I have said to the Lord\, “You are my Lord\, my good above all other.”All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land\, *   upon those who are noble among the people. But those who run after other gods *   shall have their troubles multiplied.Their libations of blood I will not offer\, *   nor take the names of their gods upon my lips.O Lord\, you are my portion and my cup; *   it is you who uphold my lot.My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; *   indeed\, I have a goodly heritage.I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; *   my heart teaches me\, night after night.I have set the Lord always before me; *   because he is at my right hand I shall not fall.My heart\, therefore\, is glad\, and my spirit rejoices; *   my body also shall rest in hope. For you will not abandon me to the grave\, *   nor let your holy one see the Pit.You will show me the path of life; *   in your presence there is fullness of joy\, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. \n\n\n\n1 Peter 1:3-9 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead\, and into an inheritance that is imperishable\, undefiled\, and unfading\, kept in heaven for you\, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice\, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials\, so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that\, though perishable\, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him\, you love him; and even though you do not see him now\, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy\, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith\, the salvation of your souls. \n\n\n\nJohn 20:19-31 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nWhen it was evening on that day\, the first day of the week\, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews\, Jesus came and stood among them and said\, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this\, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again\, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me\, so I send you.’ When he had said this\, he breathed on them and said to them\, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any\, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any\, they are retained.’But Thomas (who was called the Twin)\, one of the twelve\, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him\, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them\, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands\, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side\, I will not believe.’A week later his disciples were again in the house\, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut\, Jesus came and stood among them and said\, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas\, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him\, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him\, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples\, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah\, the Son of God\, and that through believing you may have life in his name. SUMMARY:The 3nd Sunday of Easter (Year A)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nO God\, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith\, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you\, in the unity of the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and for ever. For the promise is for you\, for your children\, and for all who are far away\, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.’ And he testified with many other arguments and exhorted them\, saying\, ‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.’ So those who welcomed his message were baptized\, and that day about three thousand persons were added. \n\n\n\nPsalm 116:1-3\,10-17 (BCP)\n\n\n\nDilexi\, quoniam \n\n\n\nI love the Lord\, because he has heard the voice of my supplication\, *   because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him.The cords of death entangled me; the grip of the grave took hold of me; *   I came to grief and sorrow. Then I called upon the Name of the Lord: *   “O Lord\, I pray you\, save my life.”How shall I repay the Lord *   for all the good things he has done for me?I will lift up the cup of salvation *   and call upon the Name of the Lord.I will fulfill my vows to the Lord *   in the presence of all his people.Precious in the sight of the Lord *   is the death of his servants.O Lord\, I am your servant; *   I am your servant and the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds.I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving *   and call upon the Name of the Lord.I will fulfill my vows to the Lord *   in the presence of all his people\,In the courts of the Lord ‘s house\, *   in the midst of you\, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah! \n\n\n\n1 Peter 1:17-23 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nIf you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds\, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors\, not with perishable things like silver or gold\, but with the precious blood of Christ\, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. He was destined before the foundation of the world\, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. Through him you have come to trust in God\, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory\, so that your faith and hope are set on God.Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love\, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew\, not of perishable but of imperishable seed\, through the living and enduring word of God. \n\n\n\nLuke 24:13-35 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nNow on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus\, about seven miles from Jerusalem\, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing\, Jesus himself came near and went with them\, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them\, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still\, looking sad. Then one of them\, whose name was Cleopas\, answered him\, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’ He asked them\, ‘What things?’ They replied\, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth\, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people\, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes\, and besides all this\, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover\, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning\, and when they did not find his body there\, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.’ Then he said to them\, ‘Oh\, how foolish you are\, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets\, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going\, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly\, saying\, ‘Stay with us\, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them\, he took bread\, blessed and broke it\, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened\, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other\, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road\, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying\, ‘The Lord has risen indeed\, and he has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what had happened on the road\, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all\, as any had need. Day by day\, as they spent much time together in the temple\, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts\, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. \n\n\n\nPsalm 23 (BCP)\n\n\n\nDominus regit me \n\n\n\nThe Lord is my shepherd; *   I shall not be in want.He makes me lie down in green pastures *   and leads me beside still waters. He revives my soul *   and guides me along right pathways for his Name’s sake.Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death\, I shall fear no evil; *   for you are with me; your rod and your staff\, they comfort me.You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; *   you have anointed my head with oil\, and my cup is running over.Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life\, *   and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. \n\n\n\n1 Peter 2:19-25 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nFor it is to your credit if\, being aware of God\, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong\, where is the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it\, you have God’s approval. For to this you have been called\, because Christ also suffered for you\, leaving you an example\, so that you should follow in his steps.‘He committed no sin\,   and no deceit was found in his mouth.’When he was abused\, he did not return abuse; when he suffered\, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross\, so that\, free from sins\, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep\, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. \n\n\n\nJohn 10:1-10 (NRSV)\n\n\n\n ‘Very truly\, I tell you\, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him\, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own\, he goes ahead of them\, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger\, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.’ Jesus used this figure of speech with them\, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.So again Jesus said to them\, ‘Very truly\, I tell you\, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved\, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life\, and have it abundantly. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen\, he prayed\, ‘Lord Jesus\, receive my spirit.’ Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice\, ‘Lord\, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this\, he died. \n\n\n\nPsalm 31:1-5\, 15-16 (BCP)\n\n\n\nIn te\, Domine\, speravi \n\n\n\nIn you\, O Lord\, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; *   deliver me in your righteousness.Incline your ear to me; *   make haste to deliver me.Be my strong rock\, a castle to keep me safe\, for you are my crag and my stronghold; *   for the sake of your Name\, lead me and guide me.Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me\, *   for you are my tower of strength.Into your hands I commend my spirit\, *   for you have redeemed me\, O Lord\, O God of truth. My times are in your hand; *   rescue me from the hand of my enemies\, and from those who persecute me.Make your face to shine upon your servant\, *   and in your loving-kindness save me.” \n\n\n\n1 Peter 2:2-10 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nLike newborn infants\, long for the pure\, spiritual milk\, so that by it you may grow into salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.Come to him\, a living stone\, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight\, and like living stones\, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house\, to be a holy priesthood\, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture:‘See\, I am laying in Zion a stone\,   a cornerstone chosen and precious;and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’To you then who believe\, he is precious; but for those who do not believe\,‘The stone that the builders rejected   has become the very head of the corner’\,and‘A stone that makes them stumble\,   and a rock that makes them fall.’They stumble because they disobey the word\, as they were destined to do.But you are a chosen race\, a royal priesthood\, a holy nation\, God’s own people\, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.Once you were not a people\,   but now you are God’s people;once you had not received mercy\,   but now you have received mercy. \n\n\n\nJohn 14:1-14 (NRSV)\n\n\n\n‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God\, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so\, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you\, I will come again and will take you to myself\, so that where I am\, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him\, ‘Lord\, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him\, ‘I am the way\, and the truth\, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me\, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’Philip said to him\, ‘Lord\, show us the Father\, and we will be satisfied.’ Jesus said to him\, ‘Have I been with you all this time\, Philip\, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say\, “Show us the Father”? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not\, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly\, I tell you\, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and\, in fact\, will do greater works than these\, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name\, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything\, I will do it. SUMMARY:The 6th Sunday of Easter (Year A) [Rogation Sunday]
Then Peter said\, ‘Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?’ So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. \n\n\n\nPsalm 98 (BCP)\n\n\n\nCantate Domino \n\n\n\nSing to the Lord a new song\, *   for he has done marvelous things. With his right hand and his holy arm *   has he won for himself the victory. The Lord has made known his victory; *   his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel\, *   and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.Shout with joy to the Lord\, all you lands; *   lift up your voice\, rejoice\, and sing.Sing to the Lord with the harp\, *   with the harp and the voice of song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn *   shout with joy before the King\, the Lord.Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it\, *   the lands and those who dwell therein.Let the rivers clap their hands\, *   and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord\, when he comes to judge the earth. In righteousness shall he judge the world *   and the peoples with equity. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?This is the one who came by water and blood\, Jesus Christ\, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies\, for the Spirit is the truth. \n\n\n\nJohn 15:9-17 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nAs the Father has loved me\, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments\, you will abide in my love\, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you\, and that your joy may be complete.‘This is my commandment\, that you love one another as I have loved you. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem\, in all Judea and Samaria\, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this\, as they were watching\, he was lifted up\, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven\, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said\, “Men of Galilee\, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus\, who has been taken up from you into heaven\, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet\, which is near Jerusalem\, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city\, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying\, Peter\, and John\, and James\, and Andrew\, Philip and Thomas\, Bartholomew and Matthew\, James son of Alphaeus\, and Simon the Zealot\, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer\, together with certain women\, including Mary the mother of Jesus\, as well as his brothers. \n\n\n\nPsalm 68:1-10\, 33-36 (BCP)\n\n\n\nExsurgat Deus \n\n\n\nLet God arise\, and let his enemies be scattered; *   let those who hate him flee before him.Let them vanish like smoke when the wind drives it away; *   as the wax melts at the fire\, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.But let the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; *   let them also be merry and joyful.Sing to God\, sing praises to his Name; exalt him who rides upon the heavens; *   YAHWEH is his Name\, rejoice before him!Father of orphans\, defender of widows\, *   God in his holy habitation!God gives the solitary a home and brings forth prisoners into freedom; *   but the rebels shall live in dry places.O God\, when you went forth before your people\, *   when you marched through the wilderness\,The earth shook\, and the skies poured down rain\, at the presence of God\, the God of Sinai\, *   at the presence of God\, the God of Israel. You sent a gracious rain\, O God\, upon your inheritance; *   you refreshed the land when it was weary.Your people found their home in it; *   in your goodness\, O God\, you have made provision for the poor.Sing to God\, O kingdoms of the earth; *   sing praises to the Lord.He rides in the heavens\, the ancient heavens; *   he sends forth his voice\, his mighty voice.Ascribe power to God; *   his majesty is over Israel; his strength is in the skies. How wonderful is God in his holy places! *   the God of Israel giving strength and power to his people! Blessed be God! \n\n\n\n1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nBeloved\, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you\, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings\, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ\, you are blessed\, because the spirit of glory\, which is the Spirit of God\, is resting on you.Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God\, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him\, because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves\, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around\, looking for someone to devour. Resist him\, steadfast in your faith\, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while\, the God of all grace\, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ\, will himself restore\, support\, strengthen\, and establish you. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen. \n\n\n\nJohn 17:1-11 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus looked up to heaven and said\, “Father\, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you\, since you have given him authority over all people\, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life\, that they may know you\, the only true God\, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now\, Father\, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.”I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. Holy Father\, protect them in your name that you have given me\, so that they may be one\, as we are one.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. Parthians\, Medes\, Elamites\, and residents of Mesopotamia\, Judea and Cappadocia\, Pontus and Asia\, Phrygia and Pamphylia\, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene\, and visitors from Rome\, both Jews and proselytes\, Cretans and Arabs– in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed\, saying to one another\, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said\, “They are filled with new wine.”But Peter\, standing with the eleven\, raised his voice and addressed them\, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem\, let this be known to you\, and listen to what I say. Indeed\, these are not drunk\, as you suppose\, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No\, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:`In the last days it will be\, God declares\,that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh\,   and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy\,and your young men shall see visions\,   and your old men shall dream dreams.Even upon my slaves\, both men and women\,in those days I will pour out my Spirit;   and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above   and signs on the earth below\,   blood\, and fire\, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness   and the moon to blood\,   before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ “ \n\n\n\nPsalm 104:25-35\, 37 (BCP)\n\n\n\nQuam magnificata sunt opera \n\n\n\nO Lord\, how manifold are your works! *   in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number\, *   creatures both small and great. There move the ships\, and there is that Leviathan\, *   which you have made for the sport of it.All of them look to you *   to give them their food in due season. You give it to them; they gather it; *   you open your hand\, and they are filled with good things. You hide your face\, and they are terrified; *   you take away their breath\, and they die and return to their dust. You send forth your Spirit\, and they are created; *   and so you renew the face of the earth.May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; *   may the Lord rejoice in all his works. He looks at the earth and it trembles; *   he touches the mountains and they smoke.I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; *   I will praise my God while I have my being.May these words of mine please him; *   I will rejoice in the Lord.Bless the Lord\, O my soul. *   Hallelujah! \n\n\n\n1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nNo one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts\, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services\, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities\, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom\, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit\, to another faith by the same Spirit\, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit\, to another the working of miracles\, to another prophecy\, to another the discernment of spirits\, to another various kinds of tongues\, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit\, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members\, and all the members of the body\, though many\, are one body\, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body– Jews or Greeks\, slaves or free– and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. \n\n\n\nJohn 20:19-23 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nWhen it was evening on that day\, the first day of the week\, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews\, Jesus came and stood among them and said\, “Peace be with you.” After he said this\, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again\, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me\, so I send you.” When he had said this\, he breathed on them and said to them\, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any\, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any\, they are retained.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America.
