We can look at adding and/or changing the time of the study. \n\n\n\nThe Bible\n\n\n\nThe Bible are the Holy Scriptures of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and Christian Scriptures (New Testament)\, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit\, containing all things necessary to salvation. \n\n\n\nThe Hebrew Scriptures reveals God’s mighty acts in creation\, the deliverance of the people of Israel from bondage in Egypt\, and the making of the old covenant with the chosen people. God’s saving will for his people is made known in the Hebrew Scriptures through the gift of the Law in the Ten Commandments and through the witness of the prophets.  \n\n\n\nThe Christian Scriptures describe the life\, death\, and resurrection of Jesus Christ\, the Messiah\, whose coming was foretold in the Hebrew Scriptures. It also tells the story of the creation of the Christian church through the gift of the Holy Spirit and presents the new covenant\, based on love\, which is the new relationship with God given by Jesus Christ to all who believe in him. (Book of Common Prayer\, pp. 850-851). \n\n\n\nThe Apocrypha\n\n\n\nThe additional books of the Apocrypha\, written by people of the old covenant\, are often included in the Bible. There are times this service may have to be changed or cancelled at the last moment. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you when you can join us at the Eucharist.  \n\n\n\nEucharist\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is the sacrament of Christ’s body and blood\, and the principal act of Christian worship. The term is from the Greek\, “thanksgiving.” \n\n\n\nJesus instituted the Eucharist “on the night when he was betrayed.” At the Last Supper he shared the bread and cup of wine at a sacred meal with his disciples. He identified the bread with his body and the wine with his blood of the new covenant. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Cor 11:23-26; Mk 14:22-25; Mt 26:26-29; Lk 22:14-20). \n\n\n\nChrist’s sacrifice is made present by the Eucharist\, and in it we are united to his one self-offering (Book of Common Prayer\, p. 859). The Last Supper provides the basis for the fourfold Eucharistic action of taking\, blessing\, breaking\, and sharing. Christ’s body and blood are really present in the sacrament of the Eucharist and received by faith. Christ’s presence is also known in the gathered eucharistic community. \n\n\n\nIn the Book of Common Prayer\, the whole service is entitled the Holy Eucharist. \n\n\n\n\nThe first part of the service is designated the Word of God. It usually includes the entrance rite\, the lessons and gradual psalm\, the gospel\, the sermon\, the Nicene Creed\, the Prayers of the People\, the confession of sin and absolution\, and the Peace.\n\n\n\nThe second portion of the service is designated the Holy Communion. It includes the offertory\, the consecration of the bread and wine in the Great Thanksgiving\, the communion of the people\, and the concluding prayers of thanksgiving and dismissal. A blessing may be given prior to the dismissal.\n\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is also called the Lord’s Supper\, Holy Communion\, the Divine Liturgy\, the Mass\, and the Great Offertory (BCP\, p. 859). \n\n\n\nThe Hymnal 1982 includes a section with a variety of hymns for the Holy Eucharist (Numbers 300 through 347)\, including “Come\, risen Lord\, and deign to be our guest” (305 and 306)\, “My God\, thy table now is spread” (321)\, “Now\, my tongue\, the mystery telling” (329 through 331)\, and “I am the bread of life” (335). \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Eucharist.)

This is just south of Seattle and right on the coast of Puget Sound. Experience a wide array of contemplative practices in community. \n\n\n\nThough only 25 miles from downtown Seattle\, the retreat center is located in a peaceful\, natural setting of 39 secluded acres of woods\, on a beachfront bluff overlooking Puget Sound. \n\n\n\nThis “Holy Quiet” retreat offers the following: \n\n\n\n\nSelect various forms of contemplative practices.\n\n\n\nGo inward. Cultivate a more intimate relationship with God and self.\n\n\n\nSlow down\, pause.\n\n\n\nShift away from a word-centric practice. Discover and remember the wisdom of silence and the “still\, small voice” of God.\n\n\n\nBe in community with other seekers.\n\n\n\nTry something different. DESCRIPTION:Church of the Redeemer rents space to Alcoholics Anonymous for this meeting. Please contact Alcoholics Anonymous for more information. A.A. is not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution. \n\n\n\nWhat is Alcoholics Anonymous?\n\n\n\nAlcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience\, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. \n\n\n\nThe only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy\, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. \n\n\n\nWhat A.A. does do: \n\n\n\n\nOur primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.\n\n\n\nA.A. members share their experience with anyone seeking help with a drinking problem; they give person-to-person service or “sponsorship” to the alcoholic coming to A.A. from any source.\n\n\n\nThe A.A. program\, set forth in our Twelve Steps\, offers the alcoholic a way to develop a satisfying life without alcohol.\n\n\n\n\nThis program is discussed at A.A. group meetings. \n\n\n\n\nOpen speaker meetings — open to alcoholics and nonalcoholics. (Attendance at an open A.A. meeting is the best way to learn what A.A. is\, what it does\, and what it does not do.) DESCRIPTION:For just as bees know how to extract honey from flowers\, which to men are agreeable only for their fragrance and color\, even so here also those who look for something more than pleasure and enjoyment in such writers may derive profit for their souls. Now\, then\, altogether after the manner of bees must we use these writings\, for the bees do not visit all the flowers without discrimination\, nor indeed do they seek to carry away entire those upon which they light\, but rather\, having taken so much as is adapted to their needs\, they let the rest go.\nSt. Basil the Great\n\n\n\nDoxacon Seattle is a fan convention devoted to the exploration of Christian themes in speculative fiction\, gaming\, and pop culture\, and of the impact of pop culture on our lives of faith. We gather in fellowship to share\, discuss\, and expand our experiences of how our faith interacts with the popular culture we engage with. Doxacon Seattle is appropriate for adults and children aged 12 and above\, and for fans from any or no religious background who are interested in the themes we explore. \n\n\n\nThe Doxacon Seattle Planning Committee is a group of faithful Christians (including Eastern Orthodox\, Catholic\, and Protestant members) who wish to expand the mission of Doxacon Prime into the Pacific Northwest. \n\n\n\nAbsolutely everybody is welcome at Doxacon Seattle! DESCRIPTION:Adult Christian Formation is on Sundays beginning at 9:30 am in the baptistry. This is just inside the doors of the room where we worship on the main floor. The cost is free. Anyone may attend\, including people that aren’t members of this or any other church. \n\n\n\nFor more information about adult Christian formation during the season after Epiphany in 20224\, contact the Rev. Deacon Theresa Newell at tnewell@redeemer-kenmore.org. \n\n\n\nPrepare for Lent\n\n\n\nOn February 11 we will prepare for Lent by discussing the benefits of being willing to examine and own our own mistakes. The ideas for this class session are loosely based on the book Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me) by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson. The book is not required reading for the class.

All are welcome! \n\n\n\nWe start at 10:30 am. Please bring your own gardening tools and protective equipment. Dress appropriately.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe memorial garden is on the north side of the main church building. To enter it\, walk as if you are going to enter the main front doors. Then\, as you approach the building\, walk to the left of those doors down the concrete walk to the back of the building.

DESCRIPTION:Church of the Redeemer rents space to Cocaine Anonymous for this meeting. Please contact Cocaine Anonymous for more information. In the spirit of Tradition Six\, C.A. is not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution. \n\n\n\nMeeting type: \n\n\n\n\nMeditation: Practices vary\, but typically there is a brief period of meditation prior to any sharing. The meditation may be silent or accompanied by audio intended to help facilitate the practice. Lights may be turned off or dimmed during the meditation.\n\n\n\nCandlelight: The meeting is conducted partly or entirely by candlelight.\n\n\n\n\nAbout C.A.\n\n\n\nCocaine Anonymous is a Fellowship of men and women who share their experience\, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others recover from their addiction. \n\n\n\nThe best way to reach someone is to speak to them on a common level. The members of C.A. are all recovering addicts who maintain their individual sobriety by working with others. We come from various social\, ethnic\, economic and religious backgrounds\, but what we have in common is addiction. \n\n\n\nThe only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances. \n\n\n\nAnyone who wants to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances (including alcohol and other drugs) is welcome. \n\n\n\nThere are no dues or fees for membership; we are fully self-supporting through our own contributions. \n\n\n\nWe do ask for voluntary contributions at meetings to cover expenses such as coffee\, rent\, literature and services to help those who are still suffering. However\, newcomers need not feel obligated to contribute. We do not accept donations from organizations or individuals outside the Fellowship. \n\n\n\nWe are not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution. \n\n\n\nIn order to maintain our integrity and avoid any possible complications\, we are not affiliated with any outside organization. Although C.A. is a spiritual program\, we do not align ourselves with any religion. Our members are free to define their spirituality as they see fit. Our individual members may have opinions of their own\, but C.A. as a whole has no opinion on outside issues. We are not affiliated with any rehabs\, recovery houses or hospitals\, but many do refer their patients to Cocaine Anonymous to maintain their sobriety. \n\n\n\nOur primary purpose is to stay free from cocaine and all other mind-altering substances and to help others achieve the same freedom. \n\n\n\nThe only purpose of Cocaine Anonymous is to offer recovery to individuals who are suffering from addiction. Our experience has shown that the most effective way to attain and maintain sobriety is to work with others suffering from the same malady. \n\n\n\nWe use the Twelve-Step recovery program because it has already been proven that the Twelve-Step recovery program works. \n\n\n\nCocaine Anonymous\n\n\n\nWelcome to Cocaine Anonymous . The first step towards solving any problem is admitting that there is a problem. \n\n\n\n12 steps of Cocaine Anonymous\n\n\n\n\nWe admitted we were powerless over cocaine and all other mind-altering substances—that our lives had become unmanageable.\n\n\n\nCame to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.\n\n\n\nMade a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.\n\n\n\nMade a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.\n\n\n\nAdmitted to God\, to ourselves\, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.\n\n\n\nWere entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.\n\n\n\nHumbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.\n\n\n\nMade a list of all persons we had harmed\, and became willing to make amends to them all.\n\n\n\nMade direct amends to such people wherever possible\, except when to do so would injure them or others.\n\n\n\nContinued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.\n\n\n\nSought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him\, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.\n\n\n\nHaving had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps\, we tried to carry this message to addicts\, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Anyone reading this can come\, whether you’ve ever been to Church of the Redeemer or not.  \n\n\n\nMeet others in the community by gathering around a meal of pancakes\, breakfast meats\, fruit salad and syrup.  \n\n\n\n\nVolunteer to help with the dinner\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact Susan Switzer\, sswitzer@redeemer-kenmore.org. \n\n\n\n\n\nShrove Tuesday\n\n\n\nCelebrated the day before Ash Wednesday\, Shrove Tuesday (also called “Pancake Tuesday” or “Pancake Day”) is the final day before the 40-day period of Lent begins. \n\n\n\nIts name comes from the Germanic-Old English word “shrive\,” meaning absolve. Because it comes directly before Lent\, a season of fasting and penitence\, this was the day that Christians would go to be “shriven” by their confessor. \n\n\n\nShrove Tuesday also became a day for pre-fasting indulgence. In particular\, the need to use up rich ingredients such as butter\, milk\, sugar and eggs before Lent gave rise to the tradition of eating pancakes on this day.

The Ash Wednesday service is one of the Proper Liturgies for Special Days in the Book of Common Prayer (p. 264). Imposition of ashes at the Ash Wednesday service is optional. \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Ash Wednesday.) \n\n\n\nEucharist\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is the sacrament of Christ’s body and blood\, and the principal act of Christian worship. The term is from the Greek\, “thanksgiving.” \n\n\n\nJesus instituted the Eucharist “on the night when he was betrayed.” At the Last Supper he shared the bread and cup of wine at a sacred meal with his disciples. He identified the bread with his body and the wine with his blood of the new covenant. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Cor 11:23-26; Mk 14:22-25; Mt 26:26-29; Lk 22:14-20). \n\n\n\nChrist’s sacrifice is made present by the Eucharist\, and in it we are united to his one self-offering (Book of Common Prayer\, p. 859). The Last Supper provides the basis for the fourfold Eucharistic action of taking\, blessing\, breaking\, and sharing. Christ’s body and blood are really present in the sacrament of the Eucharist and received by faith. Christ’s presence is also known in the gathered eucharistic community. \n\n\n\nIn the Book of Common Prayer\, the whole service is entitled the Holy Eucharist. \n\n\n\n\nThe first part of the service is designated the Word of God. It usually includes the entrance rite\, the lessons and gradual psalm\, the gospel\, the sermon\, the Nicene Creed\, the Prayers of the People\, the confession of sin and absolution\, and the Peace.\n\n\n\nThe second portion of the service is designated the Holy Communion. It includes the offertory\, the consecration of the bread and wine in the Great Thanksgiving\, the communion of the people\, and the concluding prayers of thanksgiving and dismissal. A blessing may be given prior to the dismissal.\n\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is also called the Lord’s Supper\, Holy Communion\, the Divine Liturgy\, the Mass\, and the Great Offertory (BCP\, p. 859). \n\n\n\nThe Hymnal 1982 includes a section with a variety of hymns for the Holy Eucharist (Numbers 300 through 347)\, including “Come\, risen Lord\, and deign to be our guest” (305 and 306)\, “My God\, thy table now is spread” (321)\, “Now\, my tongue\, the mystery telling” (329 through 331)\, and “I am the bread of life” (335). \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Eucharist.)

A.A. is not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution. \n\n\n\nWhat is Alcoholics Anonymous?\n\n\n\nAlcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience\, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. \n\n\n\nThe only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy\, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. \n\n\n\nWhat A.A. does do: \n\n\n\n\nOur primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.\n\n\n\nA.A. members share their experience with anyone seeking help with a drinking problem; they give person-to-person service or “sponsorship” to the alcoholic coming to A.A. from any source.\n\n\n\nThe A.A. program\, set forth in our Twelve Steps\, offers the alcoholic a way to develop a satisfying life without alcohol.\n\n\n\n\nThis program is discussed at A.A. group meetings. \n\n\n\n\nOpen speaker meetings — open to alcoholics and nonalcoholics. We invite you to attend our next Parish Workparty on Saturday\, February 17\, 2024.  \n\n\n\nWe start with Morning Prayer at 9:30 am\, followed by various activities.  Feel free to bring gardening and small maintenance tools to help with minor repairs. Treats are provided. \n\n\n\nWe work on these following activites: \n\n\n\n\nAdjust door hardware.\n\n\n\nClear entry planting areas\, install signs\, check hand wash facilities\, and lighting. \n\n\n\nGeneral cleaning\, and preparations for worship in Lent.\n\n\n\n\nEveryone will review the 2024 Workparty Calendar for input to see what activities we need. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you!

In the spirit of Tradition Six\, C.A. is not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution. \n\n\n\nMeeting type: \n\n\n\n\nMeditation: Practices vary\, but typically there is a brief period of meditation prior to any sharing. The meditation may be silent or accompanied by audio intended to help facilitate the practice. Lights may be turned off or dimmed during the meditation.\n\n\n\nCandlelight: The meeting is conducted partly or entirely by candlelight.\n\n\n\n\nAbout C.A.\n\n\n\nCocaine Anonymous is a Fellowship of men and women who share their experience\, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others recover from their addiction. \n\n\n\nThe best way to reach someone is to speak to them on a common level. The members of C.A. are all recovering addicts who maintain their individual sobriety by working with others. We come from various social\, ethnic\, economic and religious backgrounds\, but what we have in common is addiction. \n\n\n\nThe only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances. \n\n\n\nAnyone who wants to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances (including alcohol and other drugs) is welcome. \n\n\n\nThere are no dues or fees for membership; we are fully self-supporting through our own contributions. \n\n\n\nWe do ask for voluntary contributions at meetings to cover expenses such as coffee\, rent\, literature and services to help those who are still suffering. However\, newcomers need not feel obligated to contribute. We do not accept donations from organizations or individuals outside the Fellowship. \n\n\n\nWe are not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution. \n\n\n\nIn order to maintain our integrity and avoid any possible complications\, we are not affiliated with any outside organization. Although C.A. is a spiritual program\, we do not align ourselves with any religion. Our members are free to define their spirituality as they see fit. Our individual members may have opinions of their own\, but C.A. as a whole has no opinion on outside issues. We are not affiliated with any rehabs\, recovery houses or hospitals\, but many do refer their patients to Cocaine Anonymous to maintain their sobriety. \n\n\n\nOur primary purpose is to stay free from cocaine and all other mind-altering substances and to help others achieve the same freedom. \n\n\n\nThe only purpose of Cocaine Anonymous is to offer recovery to individuals who are suffering from addiction. Our experience has shown that the most effective way to attain and maintain sobriety is to work with others suffering from the same malady. \n\n\n\nWe use the Twelve-Step recovery program because it has already been proven that the Twelve-Step recovery program works. \n\n\n\nCocaine Anonymous\n\n\n\nWelcome to Cocaine Anonymous . We are all here for the same reason—our inability to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances. The first step towards solving any problem is admitting that there is a problem. \n\n\n\n12 steps of Cocaine Anonymous\n\n\n\n\nWe admitted we were powerless over cocaine and all other mind-altering substances—that our lives had become unmanageable.\n\n\n\nCame to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.\n\n\n\nMade a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.\n\n\n\nMade a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.\n\n\n\nAdmitted to God\, to ourselves\, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.\n\n\n\nWere entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.\n\n\n\nHumbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.\n\n\n\nMade a list of all persons we had harmed\, and became willing to make amends to them all.\n\n\n\nMade direct amends to such people wherever possible\, except when to do so would injure them or others.\n\n\n\nContinued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.\n\n\n\nSought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him\, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.\n\n\n\nHaving had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps\, we tried to carry this message to addicts\, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

SUMMARY:Lenten Book Discussion for Young Adults
DESCRIPTION:We’ll gather on Tuesday evenings in Lent from 7:00 – 8:00 pm to discuss this autobiographical narrative. It is about a Lutheran pastor’s journey to build an accepting community in New York City. Starting the church of St. Lydia’s\, the author Emily Scott united neighbors and friends. She used an informal dinner church where all were welcome and affirmed. Since the publication of this book\, the “dinner church” concept has spread across the U.S. \n\n\n\nDiscussion facilitator\n\n\n\nThe facilitator is Rachel Friedland\, who grew up in the Episcopal Church. She has done Youth council in Seattle and Episcopal Service Corps in Minneapolis \n\n\n\nCurrently revisiting her roots in King County\, Rachel\, a historian\,  just submitted a book for publication on the history of the city of Kent.  \n\n\n\nRachel is active in diocesan young adult events. We can look at adding and/or changing the time of the study. \n\n\n\nThe Bible\n\n\n\nThe Bible are the Holy Scriptures of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and Christian Scriptures (New Testament)\, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit\, containing all things necessary to salvation. \n\n\n\nThe Hebrew Scriptures reveals God’s mighty acts in creation\, the deliverance of the people of Israel from bondage in Egypt\, and the making of the old covenant with the chosen people. God’s saving will for his people is made known in the Hebrew Scriptures through the gift of the Law in the Ten Commandments and through the witness of the prophets.  \n\n\n\nThe Christian Scriptures describe the life\, death\, and resurrection of Jesus Christ\, the Messiah\, whose coming was foretold in the Hebrew Scriptures. It also tells the story of the creation of the Christian church through the gift of the Holy Spirit and presents the new covenant\, based on love\, which is the new relationship with God given by Jesus Christ to all who believe in him. (Book of Common Prayer\, pp. 850-851). \n\n\n\nThe Apocrypha\n\n\n\nThe additional books of the Apocrypha\, written by people of the old covenant\, are often included in the Bible. Although selections from the Apocrypha are used in the worship of the Episcopal Church\, the Apocryphal books are not generally considered of equal scriptural authority in Anglicanism with the Hebrew Scriptures and Christian Scriptures. \n\n\n\nTranslations used in the Episcopal Church\n\n\n\nThe translations of the Bible authorized for use in the worship of the Episcopal Church are the following: \n\n\n\n\nThe King James Version (Authorized Version)\, together with the Marginal Readings authorized for use by the General Convention of 1901\n\n\n\nThe English Revision of 1881\n\n\n\nThe American Revision of 1901\n\n\n\nThe Revised Standard Version of 1952\n\n\n\nThe Jerusalem Bible of 1966\n\n\n\nThe New English Bible with the Apocrypha of 1970\n\n\n\nThe 1976 Good News Bible (Today’s English Version)\n\n\n\nThe New American Bible (1970)\n\n\n\nThe Revised Standard Version\, an Ecumenical Edition\, known as the “R.S.V.
