SUMMARY:Alcoholics Anonymous: Kenmore Friday Nighters
DESCRIPTION:Church of the Redeemer rents space to Alcoholics Anonymous for this meeting. Please contact Alcoholics Anonymous for more information. A.A. is not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution. \n\n\n\nWhat is Alcoholics Anonymous?\n\n\n\nAlcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience\, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. \n\n\n\nThe only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy\, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. \n\n\n\nWhat A.A. does do: \n\n\n\n\nOur primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.\n\n\n\nA.A. members share their experience with anyone seeking help with a drinking problem; they give person-to-person service or “sponsorship” to the alcoholic coming to A.A. from any source.\n\n\n\nThe A.A. program\, set forth in our Twelve Steps\, offers the alcoholic a way to develop a satisfying life without alcohol.\n\n\n\n\nThis program is discussed at A.A. group meetings. \n\n\n\n\nOpen speaker meetings — open to alcoholics and nonalcoholics. (Attendance at an open A.A. meeting is the best way to learn what A.A. is\, what it does\, and what it does not do.) At speaker meetings\, A.A. members “tell their stories.” They describe their experiences with alcohol\, how they came to A.A.\, and how their lives have changed as a result of Alcoholics Anonymous.\n\n\n\nOpen discussion meetings — one member speaks briefly about his or her drinking experience\, and then leads a discussion on A.A. recovery or any drinking-related problem anyone brings up. (Closed meetings are for A.A.s or anyone who may have a drinking problem.)\n\n\n\nClosed discussion meetings — conducted just as open discussions are\, but for alcoholics or prospective A.A.s only.\n\n\n\nStep meetings (usually closed) — discussion of one of the Twelve Steps.

SUMMARY:The Fourth Sunday in Lent—Lætare Sunday (Year B)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nGracious Father\, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread\, that he may live in us\, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and for ever. Biden\, Jr\, President of the United StatesKamala Harris\, Vice President of the United States \n\n\n\nJay Inslee\, Governor of Washington \n\n\n\nTeri Gobin\, Chair of the Tulalip PeoplesCecile Hanson\, Chair of the Duwamish PeopleFawn Sharp\, President of the National Congress of American Indians \n\n\n\nLessons\n\n\n\nLessons appointed for use for this day from the Revised Common Lectionary (Episcopal version). \n\n\n\nNumbers 21:4-9 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nFrom Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea\, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses\, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water\, and we detest this miserable food.” Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people\, and they bit the people\, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said\, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses\, “Make a poisonous serpent\, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” So Moses made a serpent of bronze\, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone\, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. \n\n\n\nPsalm 107:1-3\,17-22 (BCP)\n\n\n\nConfitemini Domino \n\n\n\n1 Give thanks to the Lord\, for he is good\, *    and his mercy endures for ever.2 Let all those whom the Lord has redeemed proclaim *    that he redeemed them from the hand of the foe.3 He gathered them out of the lands; *    from the east and from the west\, from the north and from the south.17 Some were fools and took to rebellious ways; *    they were afflicted because of their sins.18 They abhorred all manner of food *    and drew near to death’s door.19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble\, *    and he delivered them from their distress.20 He sent forth his word and healed them *    and saved them from the grave.21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercy *    and the wonders he does for his children.22 Let them offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving *    and tell of his acts with shouts of joy. \n\n\n\nEphesians 2:1-10 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nYou were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived\, following the course of this world\, following the ruler of the power of the air\, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh\, following the desires of flesh and senses\, and we were by nature children of wrath\, like everyone else. But God\, who is rich in mercy\, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses\, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus\, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith\, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—not the result of works\, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us\, created in Christ Jesus for good works\, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. \n\n\n\nJohn 3:14-21 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nJesus said\, “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness\, so must the Son of Man be lifted up\, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son\, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed\, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world\, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already\, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment\, that the light has come into the world\, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light\, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light\, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. SUMMARY:In-person Holy Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome at Church of the Redeemer. We look forward to seeing you at this 8:00 am Sunday service of Holy Eucharist at Church of the Redeemer. It is in-person only. \n\n\n\nWhile not required\, you may wear a mask when in the building. We have masks available for you\, if you want. \n\n\n\nEucharist\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is the sacrament of Christ’s body and blood\, and the principal act of Christian worship. The term is from the Greek\, “thanksgiving.” \n\n\n\nJesus instituted the Eucharist “on the night when he was betrayed.” At the Last Supper he shared the bread and cup of wine at a sacred meal with his disciples. He identified the bread with his body and the wine with his blood of the new covenant. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Mark 14:22-25; Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:14-20). \n\n\n\nChrist’s sacrifice is made present by the Eucharist\, and in it we are united to his one self-offering (Book of Common Prayer\, p. 859). The Last Supper provides the basis for the fourfold Eucharistic action of taking\, blessing\, breaking\, and sharing. Christ’s body and blood are really present in the sacrament of the Eucharist and received by faith. Christ’s presence is also known in the gathered eucharistic community. \n\n\n\nIn the Book of Common Prayer\, the whole service is entitled the Holy Eucharist. \n\n\n\n\nThe first part of the service is designated the Word of God. It usually includes the entrance rite\, the lessons and gradual psalm\, the gospel\, the sermon\, the Nicene Creed\, the Prayers of the People\, the confession of sin and absolution\, and the Peace.\n\n\n\nThe second portion of the service is designated the Holy Communion. It includes the offertory\, the consecration of the bread and wine in the Great Thanksgiving\, the communion of the people\, and the concluding prayers of thanksgiving and dismissal. A blessing may be given prior to the dismissal.\n\n\n\n\nThe Eucharist is also called the Lord’s Supper\, Holy Communion\, the Divine Liturgy\, the Mass\, and the Great Offertory (BCP\, p. 859). \n\n\n\nThe Hymnal 1982 includes a section with a variety of hymns for the Holy Eucharist (Numbers 300 through 347)\, including “Come\, risen Lord\, and deign to be our guest” (305 and 306)\, “My God\, thy table now is spread” (321)\, “Now\, my tongue\, the mystery telling” (329 through 331)\, and “I am the bread of life” (335). \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Eucharist .)

SUMMARY:In-person and on-line Holy Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome at Church of the Redeemer. We look forward to seeing you at this 10:30 am service of Holy Eucharist at Church of the Redeemer. It is in-person and on-line. \n\n\n\nWhile not required\, you may wear a mask when in the building. We have masks available for you\, if you want. \n\n\n\nThe service is broadcast live on the Welcome page of this website. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Cor 11:23-26; Mk 14:22-25; Mt 26:26-29; Lk 22:14-20).

SUMMARY:Cocaine Anonymous: Kenmore Keystone (D3)
DESCRIPTION:Church of the Redeemer rents space to Cocaine Anonymous for this meeting. Please contact Cocaine Anonymous for more information. In the spirit of Tradition Six\, C.A. is not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution. \n\n\n\nMeeting type: \n\n\n\n\nMeditation: Practices vary\, but typically there is a brief period of meditation prior to any sharing. The meditation may be silent or accompanied by audio intended to help facilitate the practice. Lights may be turned off or dimmed during the meditation.\n\n\n\nCandlelight: The meeting is conducted partly or entirely by candlelight.\n\n\n\n\nAbout C.A.\n\n\n\nCocaine Anonymous is a Fellowship of men and women who share their experience\, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others recover from their addiction. \n\n\n\nThe best way to reach someone is to speak to them on a common level. The members of C.A. are all recovering addicts who maintain their individual sobriety by working with others. We come from various social\, ethnic\, economic and religious backgrounds\, but what we have in common is addiction. \n\n\n\nThe only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances. \n\n\n\nAnyone who wants to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances (including alcohol and other drugs) is welcome. \n\n\n\nThere are no dues or fees for membership; we are fully self-supporting through our own contributions. \n\n\n\nWe do ask for voluntary contributions at meetings to cover expenses such as coffee\, rent\, literature and services to help those who are still suffering. However\, newcomers need not feel obligated to contribute. We do not accept donations from organizations or individuals outside the Fellowship. \n\n\n\nWe are not allied with any sect\, denomination\, politics\, organization or institution. \n\n\n\nIn order to maintain our integrity and avoid any possible complications\, we are not affiliated with any outside organization. Although C.A. is a spiritual program\, we do not align ourselves with any religion. Our members are free to define their spirituality as they see fit. Our individual members may have opinions of their own\, but C.A. as a whole has no opinion on outside issues. We are not affiliated with any rehabs\, recovery houses or hospitals\, but many do refer their patients to Cocaine Anonymous to maintain their sobriety. \n\n\n\nOur primary purpose is to stay free from cocaine and all other mind-altering substances and to help others achieve the same freedom. \n\n\n\nThe only purpose of Cocaine Anonymous is to offer recovery to individuals who are suffering from addiction. Our experience has shown that the most effective way to attain and maintain sobriety is to work with others suffering from the same malady. \n\n\n\nWe use the Twelve-Step recovery program because it has already been proven that the Twelve-Step recovery program works. \n\n\n\nCocaine Anonymous\n\n\n\nWelcome to Cocaine Anonymous . We are all here for the same reason—our inability to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances. The first step towards solving any problem is admitting that there is a problem. \n\n\n\n12 steps of Cocaine Anonymous\n\n\n\n\nWe admitted we were powerless over cocaine and all other mind-altering substances—that our lives had become unmanageable.\n\n\n\nCame to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.\n\n\n\nMade a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.\n\n\n\nMade a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.\n\n\n\nAdmitted to God\, to ourselves\, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.\n\n\n\nWere entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.\n\n\n\nHumbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.\n\n\n\nMade a list of all persons we had harmed\, and became willing to make amends to them all.\n\n\n\nMade direct amends to such people wherever possible\, except when to do so would injure them or others.\n\n\n\nContinued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.\n\n\n\nSought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him\, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.\n\n\n\nHaving had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps\, we tried to carry this message to addicts\, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

SUMMARY:Lenten Book Discussion for Young Adults
DESCRIPTION:We’ll gather on Tuesday evenings in Lent from 7:00 – 8:00 pm to discuss this autobiographical narrative. It is about a Lutheran pastor’s journey to build an accepting community in New York City. Starting the church of St. Lydia’s\, the author Emily Scott united neighbors and friends. She used an informal dinner church where all were welcome and affirmed. Since the publication of this book\, the “dinner church” concept has spread across the U.S. \n\n\n\nDiscussion facilitator\n\n\n\nThe facilitator is Rachel Friedland\, who grew up in the Episcopal Church. She has done Youth council in Seattle and Episcopal Service Corps in Minneapolis \n\n\n\nCurrently revisiting her roots in King County\, Rachel\, a historian\, just submitted a book for publication on the history of the city of Kent. \n\n\n\nRachel is active in diocesan young adult events. And she is thrilled to be returning to the Diocese of Olympia to facilitate this book discussion. \n\n\n\nBook discussion schedule\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet using Zoom on these Tuesdays: \n\n\n\n\nFebruary 20\n\n\n\nFebruary 27\n\n\n\nMarch 5\n\n\n\nMarch 12\n\n\n\nMarch 19 \n\n\n\n\nOn the final Tuesday\, March 26\, during Holy Week\, we will gather together for our own version of Dinner Church at the Office of the Bishop\, 1551 10th Avenue E.\, Seattle\, on Capitol Hill. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nA free copy of the book will be sent with your registration. Register here!

SUMMARY:Bible Study
DESCRIPTION:Redeemer offers a weekly Bible study. Join Fr. Jed to delve deeper into scripture and grow in the knowledge and love of God.  \n\n\n\nBible study will be at 11:00 am. We will be studying the readings for the coming Sunday.  \n\n\n\nWatch for last-minute announcements about changes on our Facebook page. There are times this study may have to be changed or cancelled at the last moment. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to join\, but this time doesn’t work for you\, please let Fr. Jed know after August 2023. We can look at adding and/or changing the time of the study. \n\n\n\nThe Bible\n\n\n\nThe Bible are the Holy Scriptures of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and Christian Scriptures (New Testament)\, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit\, containing all things necessary to salvation. \n\n\n\nThe Hebrew Scriptures reveals God’s mighty acts in creation\, the deliverance of the people of Israel from bondage in Egypt\, and the making of the old covenant with the chosen people. God’s saving will for his people is made known in the Hebrew Scriptures through the gift of the Law in the Ten Commandments and through the witness of the prophets. \n\n\n\nThe Christian Scriptures describe the life\, death\, and resurrection of Jesus Christ\, the Messiah\, whose coming was foretold in the Hebrew Scriptures. It also tells the story of the creation of the Christian church through the gift of the Holy Spirit and presents the new covenant\, based on love\, which is the new relationship with God given by Jesus Christ to all who believe in him. (Book of Common Prayer\, pp. 850-851). \n\n\n\nThe Apocrypha\n\n\n\nThe additional books of the Apocrypha\, written by people of the old covenant\, are often included in the Bible. Although selections from the Apocrypha are used in the worship of the Episcopal Church\, the Apocryphal books are not generally considered of equal scriptural authority in Anglicanism with the Hebrew Scriptures and Christian Scriptures. \n\n\n\nTranslations used in the Episcopal Church\n\n\n\nThe translations of the Bible authorized for use in the worship of the Episcopal Church are the following: \n\n\n\n\nThe King James Version (Authorized Version)\, together with the Marginal Readings authorized for use by the General Convention of 1901\n\n\n\nThe English Revision of 1881\n\n\n\nThe American Revision of 1901\n\n\n\nThe Revised Standard Version of 1952\n\n\n\nThe Jerusalem Bible of 1966\n\n\n\nThe New English Bible with the Apocrypha of 1970\n\n\n\nThe 1976 Good News Bible (Today’s English Version)\n\n\n\nThe New American Bible (1970)\n\n\n\nThe Revised Standard Version\, an Ecumenical Edition\, known as the “R.S.V. Common Bible” (1973)\n\n\n\nThe New International Version (1978)\n\n\n\nThe New Jerusalem Bible (1987)\n\n\n\nThe Revised English Bible (1989)\n\n\n\nThe New Revised Standard Version Bible (1990) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n(The above section on the Bible adapted from The Bible.)

SUMMARY:Holy Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Redeemer offers the Holy Eucharist on Wednesdays at 12:00 noon.  \n\n\n\nJoin us to find for this short opportunity to commune with God. Find the stillness and peace of God in the midst of the week.  \n\n\n\nWatch for last-minute announcements about changes on our Facebook page. There are times this service may have to be changed or cancelled at the last moment. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you when you can join us at the Eucharist. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Cor 11:23-26; Mk 14:22-25; Mt 26:26-29; Lk 22:14-20). \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Eucharist.)

SUMMARY:The Fifth Sunday in Lent (Year B)
DESCRIPTION:Prayers\n\n\n\nAlmighty God\, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that\, among the swift and varied changes of the world\, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord\, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit\, one God\, now and for ever. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke\, though I was their husband\,” says the Lord. “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days\,” says the Lord: “I will put my law within them\, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God\, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another\, or say to each other\, ‘Know the Lord\,’ for they shall all know me\, from the least of them to the greatest\,” says the Lord; “for I will forgive their iniquity\, and remember their sin no more.” \n\n\n\nPsalm 51:1-13 (BCP)\n\n\n\nMiserere mei\, Deus \n\n\n\n1 Have mercy on me\, O God\, according to your loving-kindness; *    in your great compassion blot out my offenses.2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness *    and cleanse me from my sin.3 For I know my transgressions\, *    and my sin is ever before me.4 Against you only have I sinned *    and done what is evil in your sight.5 And so you are justified when you speak *    and upright in your judgment.6 Indeed\, I have been wicked from my birth\, *    a sinner from my mother’s womb.7 For behold\, you look for truth deep within me\, *    and will make me understand wisdom secretly.8 Purge me from my sin\, and I shall be pure; *    wash me\, and I shall be clean indeed.9 Make me hear of joy and gladness\, *    that the body you have broken may rejoice.10 Hide your face from my sins *    and blot out all my iniquities.11 Create in me a clean heart\, O God\, *    and renew a right spirit within me.12 Cast me not away from your presence *    and take not your holy Spirit from me.13 Give me the joy of your saving help again *    and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit. \n\n\n\nHebrews 5:5-10 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nChrist did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest\, but was appointed by the one who said to him\, “You are my Son\, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place\, “You are a priest forever\, according to the order of Melchizedek.” In the days of his flesh\, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications\, with loud cries and tears\, to the one who was able to save him from death\, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son\, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect\, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him\, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. \n\n\n\nJohn 12:20-33 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nNow among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip\, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee\, and said to him\, “Sir\, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them\, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly\, I tell you\, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies\, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies\, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it\, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me\, and where I am\, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me\, the Father will honor. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father\, save me from this hour’? No\, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father\, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven\, “I have glorified it\, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said\, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered\, “This voice has come for your sake\, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I\, when I am lifted up from the earth\, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America.

Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Cor 11:23-26; Mk 14:22-25; Mt 26:26-29; Lk 22:14-20). \n\n\n\n(Above taken from Eucharist.)

SUMMARY:Lazarus Saturday Workparty
DESCRIPTION:Help us prepare the building and grounds for Holy Week at Church of the Redeemer at the Lazarus Saturday Workparty. \n\n\n\n\n9:30 am. The Workparty begins with Morning Prayer.\n\n\n\n10:30 am. Liturgy practice for Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday.\n\n\n\n\nMeet some people. Do something different. Touch some grass. Saturday\, March 23\, 2024\, starting at 9:30 am in the chapel at Redeemer. \n\n\n\nWeeding at the workparty in July 2023\,\n\n\n\nThere is always refreshments. “…for the scripture says\, ‘You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain’ and ‘The laborer deserves to be paid’ (1 Timothy 5:18 NRSVue). \n\n\n\nCleaning inside the church building during a workparty.\n\n\n\nWe always have things for anyone to do at workparties\, regardless of age or ability. It is spring cleaning! \n\n\n\nProcessional crosses prepared for Palm Sunday in 2019.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Lazarus Saturday?\n\n\n\nChurch of the Redeemer borrows “Lazarus Saturday” from Eastern Christianity. The day is the moveable feast marking the day before Palm Sunday\, celebrating the raising of Lazarus of Bethany. \n\n\n\nJohn’s gospel reports that “Six days before the Passover\, Jesus came to Bethany\, where Lazarus lived\, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.” Presumably\, Bethany is where he spent the Great Sabbath that occurs immediately before Passover\, prior to Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Jesus is reported to have lodged there during Holy Week. It is where the anointing of Jesus by Lazarus’ sister Mary took place a few days later on Holy Wednesday. \n\n\n\n(Borrowed heavily from Lazarus Saturday.) \n\n\n\nMemorial Garden statue at Church of the Redeemer.

If anyone says to you\, ‘Why are you doing this?’ just say this\, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.’” They went away and found a colt tied near a door\, outside in the street. As they were untying it\, some of the bystanders said to them\, “What are you doing\, untying the colt?” They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road\, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting\, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. \n\n\n\nPsalm 118:1-2\, 19-29 (BCP)\n\n\n\nConfitemini Domino \n\n\n\n1 Give thanks to the Lord\, for he is good; *    his mercy endures for ever.2 Let Israel now proclaim\, *    “His mercy endures for ever.”19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; *    I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the Lord.20 “This is the gate of the Lord; *    he who is righteous may enter.”21 I will give thanks to you\, for you answered me *    and have become my salvation.22 The same stone which the builders rejected *    has become the chief cornerstone.23 This is the Lord’s doing\, *    and it is marvelous in our eyes.24 On this day the Lord has acted; *    we will rejoice and be glad in it.25 Hosannah\, Lord\, hosannah! *    Lord\, send us now success.26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; *    we bless you from the house of the Lord.27 God is the Lord; he has shined upon us; *    form a procession with branches up to the horns of the altar.28 “You are my God\, and I will thank you; *    you are my God\, and I will exalt you.”29 Give thanks to the Lord\, for he is good; *    his mercy endures for ever. \n\n\n\nThe Liturgy of the Word\n\n\n\nIsaiah 45:21-25 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nDeclare and present your case;   let them take counsel together!Who told this long ago?   Who declared it of old?Was it not I\, the Lord?   There is no other god besides me\,a righteous God and a Saviour;   there is no one besides me. \n\n\n\nTurn to me and be saved\,   all the ends of the earth!   For I am God\, and there is no other.By myself I have sworn\,   from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness   a word that shall not return:‘To me every knee shall bow\,   every tongue shall swear.’ \n\n\n\nOnly in the Lord\, it shall be said of me\,   are righteousness and strength;all who were incensed against him   shall come to him and be ashamed. In the Lord all the offspring of Israel   shall triumph and glory. \n\n\n\nPsalm 22:1-21 [or 1-11] (BCP)\n\n\n\nDeus\, Deus meus \n\n\n\n 1 My God\, my God\, why have you forsaken me? *     and are so far from my cry and from the words of my distress? \n\n\n\n 2 O my God\, I cry in the daytime\, but you do not answer; *     by night as well\, but I find no rest. \n\n\n\n 3 Yet you are the Holy One\, *     enthroned upon the praises of Israel. \n\n\n\n 4 Our forefathers put their trust in you; *    they trusted\, and you delivered them. \n\n\n\n 5 They cried out to you and were delivered; *    they trusted in you and were not put to shame. \n\n\n\n 6 But as for me\, I am a worm and no man\, *     scorned by all and despised by the people. \n\n\n\n 7 All who see me laugh me to scorn; *    they curl their lips and wag their heads\, saying\, \n\n\n\n 8 “He trusted in the LORD; let him deliver him; *    let him rescue him\, if he delights in him.” \n\n\n\n 9 Yet you are he who took me out of the womb\, *    and kept me safe upon my mother’s breast. \n\n\n\n10 I have been entrusted to you ever since I was born; *    you were my God when I was still in my mother’s womb. \n\n\n\n11 Be not far from me\, for trouble is near\, *    and there is none to help. \n\n\n\n12 Many young bulls encircle me; *    strong bulls of Bashan surround me. \n\n\n\n13 They open wide their jaws at me\, *     like a ravening and a roaring lion. \n\n\n\n14 I am poured out like water; all my bones are out of joint; *    my heart within my breast is melting wax. \n\n\n\n15 My mouth is dried out like a pot-sherd; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; *    and you have laid me in the dust of the grave. \n\n\n\n16 Packs of dogs close me in\, and gangs of evildoers circle around me; *    they pierce my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones. \n\n\n\n17 They stare and gloat over me; *    they divide my garments among them; they cast lots for my clothing. \n\n\n\n18 Be not far away\, O LORD; *    you are my strength; hasten to help me. \n\n\n\n19 Save me from the sword\, *    my life from the power of the dog. \n\n\n\n20 Save me from the lion’s mouth\, *    my wretched body from the horns of wild bulls. \n\n\n\n21 I will declare your Name to my brethren; *    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. \n\n\n\nPhilippians 2:5-11 (NRSV)\n\n\n\nLet the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus\, who\, though he was in the form of God\, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited\, but emptied himself\, taking the form of a slave\, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form\, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name\, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend\, in heaven and on earth and under the earth\, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord\, to the glory of God the Father. \n\n\n\nMark 14:32—15:47 (NRSV) [or 15:1-39(40-47)]\n\n\n\nNarratorThey went to a place called Gethsemane; and Jesus said to his disciples\,JesusSit here while I pray.NarratorJesus took with him Peter and James and John\, and began to be distressed and agitated. And he said to the three disciples\,JesusI am deeply grieved\, even to death; remain here\, and keep awake.NarratorAnd going a little farther\, Jesus threw himself on the ground and prayed that\, if it were possible\, the hour might pass from him. He said\,JesusAbba\, Father\, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet\, not what I want\, but what you want.NarratorJesus came and found the disciples sleeping; and he said to Peter\,JesusSimon\, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour? Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing\, but the flesh is weak.NarratorAnd again Jesus went away and prayed\, saying the same words. And once more he came and found the disciples sleeping\, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to say to him.Jesus came a third time and said to them\,JesusAre you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up\, let us be going. See\, my betrayer is at hand.NarratorImmediately\, while Jesus was still speaking\, Judas\, one of the twelve\, arrived; and with him there was a crowd with swords and clubs\, from the chief priests\, the scribes\, and the elders. Now the betrayer had given the crowd a sign\, saying\,JudasThe one I will kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.NarratorSo when Judas came\, he went up to Jesus at once and said\,JudasRabbi!Narratorand kissed him. Then the crowd laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. But one of those who stood near drew his sword and struck the slave of the high priest\, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to them\,JesusHave you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching\, and you did not arrest me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled.NarratorAll of Jesus’ followers deserted him and fled. A certain young man was following Jesus\, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. The crowd caught hold of him\, but he left the linen cloth and ran off naked. They took Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests\, the elders\, and the scribes were assembled. Peter had followed Jesus at a distance\, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the guards\, warming himself at the fire. Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none. For many gave false testimony against him\, and their testimony did not agree. Some stood up and gave false testimony against Jesus\, saying\,WitnessWe heard him say\, “I will destroy this temple that is made with hands\, and in three days I will build another\, not made with hands.”NarratorBut even on this point their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus\,High PriestHave you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?NarratorBut Jesus was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest asked him\,High PriestAre you the Messiah\, the Son of the Blessed One?NarratorJesus said\,JesusI am; and “you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power\,” and “coming with the clouds of heaven.”NarratorThen the high priest tore his clothes and said\,High PriestWhy do we still need witnesses? You have heard his blasphemy! What is your decision?NarratorThe whole council condemned Jesus as deserving death. Some began to spit on him\, to blindfold him\, and to strike him\, saying to him\,CouncilProphesy!NarratorThe guards also took Jesus over and beat him. While Peter was below in the courtyard\, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came by. When she saw Peter warming himself\, she stared at him and said\,ServantYou also were with Jesus\, the man from Nazareth.NarratorBut Peter denied it\, saying\,PeterI do not know or understand what you are talking about.NarratorAnd Peter went out into the forecourt. Then the cock crowed. And the servant-girl\, on seeing him\, began again to say to the bystanders\,ServantThis man is one of them.NarratorBut again Peter denied it. Then after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter\,Bystander 1Certainly you are one of them; for you are a Galilean.NarratorBut Peter began to curse\, and he swore an oath\,PeterI do not know this man you are talking about.NarratorAt that moment the cock crowed for the second time. Then Peter remembered that Jesus had said to him\,JesusBefore the cock crows twice\, you will deny me three times.NarratorAnd Peter broke down and wept.[Mark 15:1-39\, (40-47)]As soon as it was morning\, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus\, led him away\, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked him\,PilateAre you the King of the Jews?NarratorJesus answered him\,JesusYou say so.NarratorThen the chief priests accused Jesus of many things. Pilate asked him again\,PilateHave you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you.NarratorBut Jesus made no further reply\, so that Pilate was amazed. Now at the festival Pilate used to release a prisoner for them\, anyone for whom they asked. Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then Pilate answered them\,PilateDo you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?NarratorFor he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas for them instead.Pilate spoke to them again\,PilateThen what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?NarratorThe crowd shouted back\,CrowdCrucify him!NarratorPilate asked them\,PilateWhy\, what evil has he done?NarratorBut they shouted all the more\,CrowdCrucify him!NarratorSo Pilate\, wishing to satisfy the crowd\, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus\, Pilate handed him over to be crucified. Then the soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard of the palace (that is\, the governor’s headquarters); and they called together the whole cohort. And they clothed Jesus in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown\, they put it on him. And they began saluting him saying\,SoldierHail\, King of the Jews!NarratorThey struck his head with a reed\, spat upon him\, and knelt down in homage to him. After mocking him\, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.The soldiers compelled a passer-by\, who was coming in from the country\, to carry Jesus’ cross; it was Simon of Cyrene\, the father of Alexander and Rufus. Then the soldiers brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull).¶ All stand. And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. And the soldiers crucified Jesus\, and divided his clothes among them\, casting lots to decide what each should take.It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified Jesus. The inscription of the charge against him read\, “The King of the Jews\,” And with Jesus they crucified two bandits\, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by derided Jesus\, shaking their heads and saying\,Passer-byAha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days\, save yourself\, and come down from the cross!NarratorIn the same way the chief priests\, along with the scribes\, were also mocking Jesus among themselves and saying\,Chief PriestHe saved others; he cannot save himself.ScribeLet the Messiah\, the King of Israel\, come down from the cross now\, so that we may see and believe.NarratorThose who were crucified with Jesus also taunted him. When it was noon\, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice\,JesusEloi\, Eloi\, lema sabachthani?Narratorwhich means\,JesusMy God\, my God\, why have you forsaken me?NarratorWhen some of the bystanders heard it\, they said\,Bystander 1Listen\, he is calling for Elijah.NarratorAnd someone ran\, filled a sponge with sour wine\, put it on a stick\, and gave it to Jesus to drink\, saying\,Bystander 2Wait\, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.NarratorThen Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.¶ Silence may be kept. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two\, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion\, who stood facing him\, saw that in this way Jesus breathed his last\, he said\,CenturionTruly this man was God’s Son!NarratorThere were also women looking on from a distance; among them were Mary Magdalene\, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses\, and Salome. These used to follow Jesus and provided for him when he was in Galilee; and there were many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem. When evening had come\, and since it was the day of Preparation\, that is\, the day before the sabbath\, Joseph of Arimathea\, a respected member of the council\, who was also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God\, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate wondered if Jesus were already dead; and summoning the centurion\, he asked him whether Jesus had been dead for some time. When Pilate learned from the centurion that Jesus was dead\, he granted the body to Joseph. Then Joseph bought a linen cloth\, and taking down the body\, wrapped it in the linen cloth\, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. Joseph then rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body was laid.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Testament\, New Testament and Gospel readings are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicized Edition\, copyright 1989\, 1995\, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America.
