Elizabeth Moses

Elizabeth Ayrault Moses, age 91, passed peacefully at home on December 28, 2022. She was filled with curiosity, joy and gratitude for God’s creation and cherished her ever widening circle of family and friends.

Born in San Diego, her family continued a long history of Naval service dating back to the Civil War. They followed her Navy father living in China, the Philippines, and many Naval Stations in the US before settling in Tacoma. She graduated from Annie Wright School and then Stanford University.

While serving in the Navy as a WAVE she met her beloved husband, Allen Moses, at Treasure Island in San Francisco. While Allen was stationed in Japan, they began 65 wonderful years of marriage.

They designed and built a beautiful home and exceptional garden in the Northwest, raising four children, and welcoming many others into their home and lives. Elizabeth served as a volunteer in many places, primarily at the UW Arboretum for over 60 years.

She was preceded in death by the following:

* Her parents, Phoebe and Arthur Ayrault
* Brother Dan Ayrault
* Daughter Christine (Moses) Hall
* Husband Allen Moses

She is survived by the following:

* Three of her children, Mim McFarland (Steve), Sarah Boettcher (Caleb), and Bruce (Lisa)
* Son-in-law Tom Hall (Sherri)
* 11 grandchildren
* 7 great grandchildren
* Sister-in-law Susan Ayrault
* 10 nieces and nephews

Services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 2:00 pm, at Church of the Redeemer, 6210 NE 181st Street, Kenmore, Washington .

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Seattle Japanese Garden or World Vision .

Burial of the Dead

The burial of the dead is the funeral rite for burial of a baptized Christian, including anthems, psalms, scripture readings, and prayers. The Episcopal Book of Common Prayer provides both traditional and contemporary liturgies (pp. 469-507). This rite may serve as the liturgy of the word at a Requiem Eucharist.

When there is communion at the Burial of the Dead, the commendation and the committal follow the communion of the people and the postcommunion prayer (BCP, pp. 482, 498). The burial rites also include the Apostles’ Creed, a special form of the prayers of the people, forms for the consecration of the grave, and additional prayers that may be added after the Lord’s Prayer.

The Book of Common Prayer also provides an Order for Burial which permits the composition of a rite to suit particular circumstances “when, for pastoral considerations, neither of the burial rites in this Book is deemed appropriate” (pp. 506-507).

The Book of Occasional Services provides appropriate texts for the burial of a person who was not a baptized Christian or who rejected the Christian faith.

The burial office is an Easter liturgy. The liturgical color is appropriately white, and the Paschal candle should be lighted as a visible reminder of Jesus’ resurrection and our hope of life everlasting in Christ. At the Burial of the Dead, those who mourn may express grief and sorrow as they share in the community’s expression of faith, hope, and mutual support in Jesus Christ.
