Adult education: The Gospel of Matthew

Sun, February 8 at 9:15 am to 10:15 am PST
Adult Christian Education resumes with each class on Tuesday that is repeated the next Sunday. These classes are in the first alcove from the parish hall. We will explore key themes and the unique perspective of The Gospel According to Matthew. How does this Gospel compare and contrast with Mark, Luke, and John?
Reading Matthew’s Gospel straight through before the first class you attend will help prepare you to see and discuss this understanding of Jesus. However, even if you have not read the Gospel, come for the conversation.
The learning from this class will deepen your understanding each Sunday as we read through the Gospel of Matthew in our lectionary.

Matthew
According to Mark, Matthew was the son of Alphaeus. He was a Jewish tax collector working for the Roman government at Capernaum.
Matthew is called Levi in the accounts of his call to discipleship in Mark and Luke. However, he is always referred to as Matthew in the lists of the apostles. It is possible that Levi was his original name and that Matthew, which means “gift from God,” was given to him after he became a disciple.
Since the second century the authorship of the first gospel has been attributed to St. Matthew. Today it is considered unlikely by most scholars that the present Gospel of Matthew was written by a Galilean tax collector.
Christian art usually pictures Matthew at a desk writing his gospel, as a winged man in his role as an evangelist. Sometimes he has spear, the legendary instrument of his death. Actually, we know nothing about his death, but he is venerated as a martyr. Matthew is commemorated in the Episcopal calendar of the church year on September 21.

Church of the Redeemer: Worshiping God, living in community, and reaching out to the world around us. We are an Episcopal Church serving north King County and south Snohomish County, Washington. As you travel your road, go with friends walking the way of Jesus at Redeemer.
Church of the Redeemer is at 6220 Northeast 181st Street in Kenmore, Washington. The campus is a short distance north of Bothell Way, near the Burke-Gilman Trail. The entrance looks like a gravel driveway. The campus is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. And we managed to hide a large building on the side of a hill that is not easily seen from the street.
The Episcopal Church welcomes you.
