Lazarus Saturday Workparty

Help us prepare the building and grounds for Holy Week at Church of the Redeemer at the Lazarus Saturday Workparty.
- 9:30 am. The Workparty begins with Morning Prayer.
- 10:30 am. Liturgy practice for Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday.
Meet some people. Do something different. Touch some grass. Saturday, March 23, 2024, starting at 9:30 am in the chapel at Redeemer.
There is always refreshments. “…for the scripture says, ‘You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain’ and ‘The laborer deserves to be paid’ (1 Timothy 5:18 NRSVue).
We always have things for anyone to do at workparties, regardless of age or ability. It is spring cleaning!
What is Lazarus Saturday?
Church of the Redeemer borrows “Lazarus Saturday” from Eastern Christianity. The day is the moveable feast marking the day before Palm Sunday, celebrating the raising of Lazarus of Bethany.
John’s gospel reports that “Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.” Presumably, Bethany is where he spent the Great Sabbath that occurs immediately before Passover, prior to Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Jesus is reported to have lodged there during Holy Week. It is where the anointing of Jesus by Lazarus’ sister Mary took place a few days later on Holy Wednesday.

Church of the Redeemer is at 6210 Northeast 181st Street in Kenmore, Washington. The campus is a short distance north of Bothell Way, near the Burke-Gilman Trail. The entrance looks like a gravel driveway. The campus is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. And we managed to hide a large building on the side of a hill that is not easily seen from the street.
