Thanks to everyone who made those gifts possible.

  • Seasonal giving for those experiencing housing insecurity

Seasonal giving for those experiencing housing insecurity

Every year for more than 30 years, people at Church of the Redeemer provide help to families facing housing insecurity during this time of year at living at Hopelink Kenmore Place. This is transitional housing for 11 families experiencing homelessness.

We need your help to assist those facing housing insecurity. There are two ways to help. Can you help us help others?

Money to buy food gift cards

Each family receives a $100 gift card for food for Thanksgiving and a second card in December. This means we need to collect $2200 for 22 cards by December 17, 2023.

Church of the Redeemer provides support to Hopelink Kenmore Place throughout the year. Any extra money raised for food gift cards at this time will go to other support for those at Kenmore Place.

Welcome gift for a child or teen

When a child or teen moves into Hopelink Kenmore Place with their family, they may have anxiety. To help them feel welcome, they are offered a gift that they can choose. This can bring a some comfort during a time of stress and change.

We collect gifts during at this time of year. We give them to the Hopelink Place staff in January to be given year-round, not specifically during the holidays. Bring your unwrapped gift to Redeemer anytime before December 17. There is a box to put your gift in the room where we worship.

    Any questions?

If you need help with brainstorming gift ideas, or anything else about this annual effort, you can email Michelle Henderson at hkp@redeemer-kenmore.org.

    2023 School Supply Drive results

In August 2023, Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore, Washington, sponsored a school supply drive for the families experiencing housing insecurity at Hopelink Kenmore Place. Donors filled 17 backpacks for kids ranging from 4 years old to 17 years old! With community help, these students start their year on an equal footing with their peers.

It costs about $50 to fill a backpack for an elementary-aged student. It costs about $100 for a backpack for middle and high school students. This is a huge barrier for those experiencing homelessness.

Church of the Redeemer provides regular support to families at Kenmore Place throughout the year. Then there are times, such as this, where extra support is provided.

    Thank you for caring.

  • School supply donation drive for Hopelink Kenmore Place families

School supply donation drive for Hopelink Kenmore Place families

Soon children will be returning to school. This includes the children in families experiencing housing insecurity. For over five years, Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore, Washington, has had a school supply drive for these families at Hopelink Kenmore Place. You can help.

“My mother was a teacher. From her, I learned the importance of being ready to learn when the school year starts,” says Susan Switzer, who heads this drive. “School supplies are so expensive. Families experiencing homelessness have no money to spare to buy supplies for their children.”

This year’s drive lasts from now until August 20, 2023. Hopelink has given Redeemer the list of items needed. Go to bit.ly/COR-HKPdonations to donate items from this list or to donate money.

Because people give to this school supply drive, a child facing housing insecurity will have pencils when school starts.

    Donate school supplies

To donate school supplies, from bit.ly/COR-HKPdonations choose from the on-line catalog. It works as an on-line store because it uses store software. Once you’ve selected your donations, go to your favorite store to buy them, and bring them to Redeemer. Deliver them to the main doors at Redeemer on Sunday mornings from now through August 20, 2023.

Do not deliver your donations during the week, as there are times when no one can receive your donations. Do not bring your donations to the parish hall on the lower level.

    Donate money

Redeemer accepts money donations for this drive, too. Things always happen that cannot go into the plans, like new residents. From bit.ly/COR-HKPdonations, use the link to donate money earmarked for the school supply drive. Any extra funds received will go to Redeemer’s other outreach efforts with Kenmore Place.

Before loading the backpacks with school supplies in 2022.

    Load the backpacks

Everyone is invited to load the backpacks with school supplies on Sunday, August 27, after the 10:30 am service.

Later that week the loaded backpacks will be taken to Kenmore Place.

    Questions

If you have any questions, Susan Switzer and Jillian Gerke are spearheading the school supply drive this year. In addition to talking to them on Sunday mornings, you can send a message to hkpschoolsupplies@redeemer-kenmore.org.

    2020 holiday giving results

The annual Christmas gift and food basket collection for Hopelink Kenmore Place at Church of the Redeemer was adapted this year because of COVID-19. We could donate money towards a $100 Safeway gift card for the 11 residences at Kenmore Place. We could also donate money to a gift fund for all Hopelink locations. The giving continues.

Michelle Henderson, who organized Redeemer’s giving efforts this Christmas, said “Thank you to everyone who donated and looking forward to 2021 when we can once again gather to do the shopping trip and prepare the gifts and food baskets.” She also said that Hopelink raised about $75,000 to help families in need all over the region.

Any extra money raised for the special Safeway gift cards for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays goes towards the regular Safeway gift cards purchased through the rest of year for Kenmore Place. To donate for these cards, go to Giving on the Redeemer website, select the Give button, and then select Outreach from the To list.

  • 2020 holiday giving

    2020 holiday giving

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, we cannot do the typical things to bring holiday cheer to people at Hopelink Kenmore Place in 2020. We cannot donate physical items, such as food or gifts. However, we can still donate to those experiencing homelessness. We can do holiday giving.

This is what Church of the Redeemer is doing for this year. Your gift of any size is welcome, whether large or small. Let us all join to make for happy holidays for those experiencing homelessness.

    Thank you very much.

Thanksgiving holiday gift card for use at Safeway

Instead of collecting food items to give for a Thanksgiving meal, Church of the Redeemer will give the 11 Kenmore Place residences a $100 gift card to Safeway. Then, the families may shop for the foods they want or need.

This collection continues through Friday, November 20, 2020. They will receive the cards on Monday, November 23.

To donate online, select Giving on the Redeemer website menu, and then select the Give button. When the window opens, enter your gift details. To route the donation to the right place, from the To list, select Shelter-Thanksgiving.

If you send a check, send it to PO Box 82677, Kenmore, WA 98028, so it arrives by November 20, 2020. Add “Kenmore Place Thanksgiving” to the memo line.

We will apply any extra money collected to the Christmas holiday gift card collection in December or for grocery cards purchased in later months. It will be used so Kenmore Place residents can buy food.

    Holiday gifts for residents

This is where the biggest change this year. We cannot hold a holiday party. We cannot buy gifts for residents.

Hopelink is collecting money from their website for residents at all their housing locations, not only Kenmore Place, so residents to buy their own gifts.

This collection is now through December 4, 2020.

To donate, go to the Donate page on the Hopelink website. To route your donation for holiday gifts, do these two things while filling out the rest of the form:

    • Under Designation, from the list, select Greatest Needs. This may be selected already for you.
    • Under Billing Address, in the Leave a comment or note for your donation (optional) box, type Holiday Gift Program.

    School supplies drive for 2020

It’s that time of year when we start perusing the shelves of our favorite stores for school supplies to donate to the children living at Hopelink Kenmore Place from Church of the Redeemer! And while this year looks a lot different for both shopping and education, the children and their families still need our support.

Coming soon, you will have the option to give a financial donation online for our school supplies drive. Or, you can purchase supplies from a comprehensive list on Amazon designed specifically for the children at Kenmore Place. Supplies will be delivered to a single location where they will be organized and delivered in a contactless drop-off.

The efforts and generosity of our Redeemer parishioners are always so appreciated by those in Kenmore Place. We want to be sure to continue to support them as they navigate remote learning from home.
