They will be exploring the miracles of Jesus.

    The Gospel of Matthew

    Adult education

Adult Christian Education resumes with each class on Tuesday repeated the next Sunday. These classes are in the first alcove from the parish hall. We will explore key themes and the unique perspective of The Gospel According to Matthew. How does the Gospel of Matthew compare and contrast with Mark, Luke and John?

Reading Matthew’s Gospel straight through before the first class you attend will help prepare you to see and discuss Matthew’s understanding of Jesus. However, even if you have not read the Gospel, come for the conversation.

The learning from this class will deepen your understanding each Sunday as we read through this Gospel in our lectionary.

    Bishop Philip LaBelle

    Bishop Philip LaBelle

The Rt. Rev. Philip N. LaBelle is the Ninth Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia. The Diocese elected Bishop LaBelle on May 18, 2024. His Consecration and Ordination as bishop was on September 14, 2024.

Bishop LaBelle previously served as rector of St. Mark’s Church in Southborough, Massachusetts. During his time in the Diocese of Massachusetts, Bishop LaBelle did the following:

    • Co-led the Mission Strategy Committee.
    • Served on Executive Committee and Diocesan Council
    • Directed the Fresh Start program.

He co-founded Southborough Neighbors for Peace with Dr. Safdar Medina in their small town. The organization did the following:

    • Hosted peace vigils.
    • Began a community-wide Iftar dinner during Ramadan.
    • Established an interfaith Thanksgiving service.
    • Sponsored other bridge-building events.

Additionally, Bishop LaBelle served on the core team of Central Mass. Connections in Faith, an organization centered on fostering relationships and learning about other religious faiths through quarterly gatherings.

    Confirmation

Confirmation is the sacramental rite in which the candidates “express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 860). The expectation is that those baptized at an early age or as adults without laying on of hands by a bishop to make a mature public affirmation of their faith, recommit themselves to the responsibilities of their baptism, and receive laying on of hands by a bishop (BCP, p. 412). The Episcopal Church considers adults baptized with the laying on of hands by a bishop as confirmed.

The Prayer Book rite for Confirmation includes forms for Reception and the Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows. Reception is when a bishop receives a person into the fellowship of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. Those who have returned from a time of religious inactivity to an active practice of faith may publicly reaffirm their baptismal vows. Others who have experienced a renewal of faith or desire to renew their Christian commitment may also reaffirm their baptismal vows. The baptismal covenant is the root of Confirmation, Reception, and Reaffirmation.

    Baptismal Covenant

Celebrant:Do you believe in God the Father?
People:I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Celebrant:Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
People:I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Celebrant:Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
People:I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Celebrant:Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
    People:I will, with God’s help.
Celebrant:Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
    People:I will, with God’s help.
Celebrant:Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?
    People:I will, with God’s help.
Celebrant:Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?
    People:I will, with God’s help.
Celebrant:Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?
    People:I will, with God’s help.

  • Advent and Christmas services 2025

Be our guest at church services at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Kenmore, Washington, for Advent and Christmas.

Advent is the first season of the church year. It begins with the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continues through the day before Christmas. The name comes from a Latin word for “coming.” The season is a time of preparation and expectation for the coming celebration of our Lord’s nativity. We also prepare and expect the final coming of Christ “in power and glory.”

Christmas (in old English, Cristes maesse, Christ’s Mass), or The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, is a festival celebrated on December 25. It commemorates the Incarnation of the Word of God in the birth of Jesus Christ. According to the Philocalian calendar, Christmas was first celebrated in Rome in the year 336. It gradually spread to the churches of the east, which already had a festival on January 6 commemorating the manifestation of God in both the birth and baptism of Jesus.

All are welcome to participate fully at Redeemer.

    • All races.
    • All religions.
    • All countries of origin.
    • All sexual orientations, including LGBTQ+.
    • All genders.

We stand with you. You are safe here.

    The 4th Sunday of Advent

    Advent

Redeemer follows its regular Sunday morning schedule in Advent.

    • There is a spoken, quiet service at 8:00 am.
    • There is adult education at 9:15 am for children and adults.
    • There is a service with singing at 10:30 am.

Children worship with their caregivers. It is fine to bring infants and small children. How else will they learn if they don’t participate?

On Sunday, December 14, 2025, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm, we invite you to an Advent Tea in the parish hall.

On Sunday, December 21, 2025, after the 10:30 am church service, we will “green the church” for Christmas. You are invited to join in the joyful fun. This activity used to be called the “hanging of the greens,” but the Green family took offense.

    Christmas

The Christmas season begins late in the afternoon on December 24.

    • At 4:00 pm, there is a family-friendly Christmas service with music.
    • At 8:00 pm, there is a full Christmas service with incense. This would be the traditional “midnight mass” type of service.

There is no service on Christmas Day, December 25.

There will be services at 8:00 am and 10:30 am on the two Sundays of Christmas. The 10:30 am service on the Second Sunday of Christmas will have a Christmas pageant.

There will be education classes for children and adults at 9:15 am on the two Sundays after Christmas.

  • Hopelink Kenmore Place Holiday collection

Episcopal Church of the Redeemer plans again this year to help families with food and housing insecurity during the holiday season. The plan is to give a $100 grocery store gift card to each family living at Hopelink Kenmore Place.

Long-standing help for families at Hopelink Kenmore Place

Church of the Redeemer has taken on projects for 40 years to help residents at Hopelink Kenmore Place. If Redeemer receives more contributions than necessary for each family to receive a $100 gift card, either or both of the following things will happen:

    • The extra money will go towards other needs at Kenmore Place.
    • The amount of the grocery gift card could be increased.

All the money earmarked for Hopelink Kenmore programs this way goes towards families at Hopelink Kenmore Place. Please be generous.

Prophetic Voices podcast available for Christmas Day

In this episode of Prophetic Voices, we’ll be discussing the lectionary for Christmas Day. The texts covered are Luke 2:1-20 and John 1:1-14.

Our thoughtful guests this week are:

    • The Rev. Dr. Christina O’Hara, a spiritual director and the rector of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Sioux Falls, S.D. She enjoys hiking, ballet, tap dance, and cuddling her two new grandbabies.
    • The Rev. Canon Dr. Altagracia Perez-Bullard, a queer, Black, urban Latina who now works and lives at Virginia Theological Seminary after 40 years of congregational ministry, both lay and ordained. She is the associate dean of multicultural ministries and assistant professor of practical theology. She feels deeply challenged to do all she can to support the thriving of creation and is discerning what that looks like at this point in her life.
    • The biblical Aaron Scott (he/him), the gender justice officer for The Episcopal Church, supporting LGBTQ+ and gender justice ministries churchwide. Aaron is a lay person in the Diocese of Olympia, a dad, and an author. He loves pumpkin spice, flannel, and all things basic and fall. [Aaron Scott has also preached at Church of the Redeemer.]

Prophetic Voices is hosted by the Rev. Isaiah “Shaneequa” Brokenleg, The Episcopal Church’s interim officer for Indigenous Ministries. For more information on Becoming Beloved Community, visit iam.ec/becomingbelovedcommunity.

Prophetic Voices: Preaching and Teaching Beloved Community

Across our church and our society, we are having profound dialogues about race, truth, justice, and healing. Coming this Advent, Prophetic Voices: Preaching and Teaching Beloved Community explores where that dialogue intersects with our faith. Join us and our invited guests as we share prophetic voices and explore the readings through the lens of social justice.

You’ll hear ancient texts interpreted in new ways, find fodder for preaching and teaching, and make present day connections to the prophetic voices of the Bible. This podcast will help us rethink how we hear, see, and interact with the lectionary readings.
