  • Holiday donations for people at Hopelink Kenmore Place

Holiday donations for people at Hopelink Kenmore Place

Thank you once again to everyone who donated food items to the families experiencing housing insecurity living at Hopelink Kenmore Place for Thanksgiving.

It is time for our end of year donations for these families. There are changes this year.

    Food donations

As we look ahead to Christmas, we continue to evolve to best meet the needs of the families experiencing housing insecurity at Kenmore Place. We have received feedback from the staff and the families we serve about what works best for them. They benefit most from a gift card that they can use to buy food of their choosing for a holiday meal, instead of a food basket with pre-purchased items.

With this in mind, Church of the Redeemer will provide each of the 11 families with a $100 gift card for food. We are asking you to donate in what ever amount you are able to help us to meet the goal of raising $1100 total.

To donate, go to Giving on the Redeemer website, select the blue Give button, and, from the To list, select Hopelink Christmas Food. We need your donation of any amount of money by December 19, 2021.

From the To list, select Hopelink Christmas Food.

    Gift donations

Kenmore Place has asked us to provide a variety of gifts for different ages to residents throughout the year for various occasions. This could be when a new family move in, for birthdays, or other occasion. To subscribe for a gift, go to Hopelink Kenmore Place holiday donations.

Please leave all gifts unwrapped. Bring them to Church of the Redeemer on Sunday, December 19, to give to Michelle Henderson.

    Partners with donations

People at Church of the Redeemer partner with people who attend Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church in Shoreline, Washington, in this holiday season project.

    Questions about donations

If you have any questions about giving towards the food gift cards or buying gifts, please email Michelle Henderson at hkp@redeemer-kenmore.org.

  • Vestry Report on Camp Unity

    Vestry Report on Camp Unity

This Vestry report on Camp Unity was written by Eivind Nilsen, Senior Warden.

    Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests;
but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. (Matthew 8:20 NRSV)

I was recently reminded of the above verse from Matthew and this, also from Matthew:

Then the king will say to those at his right hand…I was hungry and you gave me food…. I was a stranger and you welcomed me….The righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food.…And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you?….. And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me’. (from Matthew 25 NRSV)

It seems that perhaps one of the best ways to see the face of Jesus is to look into the face of a homeless person.  Save that thought away in a corner of your mind and read on.

Late last summer, Church of the Redeemer was approached by an organization—Camp Unity Eastside which is a faith-based organization that finds host sites, manages and organizes tent communities for the homeless—with a proposal that we host a tent encampment for four months starting in June 2022. After some discussion, the vestry recognized that this held the promise of engaging in a life-changing mission consistent with our faith, values and desire to live out that faith in the world in real and tangible ways. And so, we set about learning more to support our decision to move forward or not.

    So, we made a plan:

    • Two of our vestry members volunteered to do a little research. Chilton Fowler and Steve Daniel made a visit to the current encampment.
    • They spoke with the organizers and with Pastor Anja Helmon of Northlake Lutheran Church, which has been a host twice for the encampment.
    • We looked at camp policies.

    What did we find?

    • A well-run, structured organization with clean and well-managed camps.
    • Policies that don’t allow drug or alcohol use and insist on respect and quiet for the church and its neighbors.
    • We found Kenmore city and police departments that support Camp Unity encampments.
    • We saw that since 2018 there had been thirteen encampments at six different churches and the City of Woodinville.  All but one of the churches have hosted two or three times.
    • Pastor Anja was overwhelmingly positive about her church’s two times of hosting. The neighbors of Northlake Lutheran had concerns initially, but all—both neighbors and parishioners—found it to be a positive experience.

We decided to move to the next step.

On October 24, a parish town hall was held.  Information was presented, questions were answered and comments provided.  While there were legitimate concerns raised, such as parking and access that will need further planning, the response was positive.  An advisory vote was taken with 85% voting to move forward, 11% undecided and 4% saying we should not do this. The vestry met afterward and voted to proceed.

    What’s next?

We have things to do in preparation. And the “what’s next?” question is partly up to you.  We are going to need to get organized around this effort including:

    • Work with Camp Unity to submit our application for a permit to the City of Kenmore.
    • Arrange for question-and-answer sessions with our neighbors.
    • Make sure the site requirements are known and ready for the camp.
    • Ensure parishioners with mobility issues have adequate parking and workable access to the building.
    • Understand and be ready for opportunities to serve the camp occupants including supplying some meals and potentially other help.
    • Partner with other faith communities to help in this effort.
    • Take the opportunity to further develop our own understanding of our relationship to those who are marginalized in the world.
    • Find out, as a part of your faith journey, how you can and want to be involved.

And so, now we come back to that thought that you tucked away in a corner of your mind.  Consider how God might be calling you as we move forward with this ministry. Reach out with questions and concerns.  Pray.  And if you’re in that 11% or 4%, pray and listen. Perhaps you’ll see Jesus in the face of the homeless.

For more information, contact Fr. Jed or Vestry members.  We will be providing periodic updates. Read this For more information on Camp Unity.

  • Neighbors Welcome: Afghan Allies Fund

    Neighbors Welcome: Afghan Allies Fund

The Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, highlights ways to help Afghan refugees through Episcopal Migration Ministries. Source for this information, también incluye el mensaje en español.

    Message from the Presiding Bishop

As Episcopalians, as followers of Jesus, as people of faith, we mourn the recent loss of life in Afghanistan, the ongoing chaos and instability, and the risk that many Afghans face, in particular women and girls.

The situation in Afghanistan is changing quickly with many lives lost and thousands more at risk. The current crisis leaves over 5 million displaced Afghans in the country, in bordering nations and many more around the world who have been evacuated, who are trying to find long-term safe solutions.

As Afghans arrive to the U.S. with the hope of safety, The Episcopal Church, through the work of Episcopal Migration Ministries, is assisting our new neighbors through the Afghan Parolee Support Program.

This new U.S. program, dependent on private resources and community-led welcome and support, will provide security and foundation necessary for arriving Afghans to begin life in the U.S.

The ministry of offering welcome to those fleeing violence is nothing less than God’s work—one that calls us to walk the way of love as Jesus of Nazareth taught us, through compassion, through practical care, showing to our newest neighbors that we are neighbors.

Episcopal Migration Ministries has launched a special appeal—Neighbors Welcome: Afghan Allies Fund—to meet the financial and in-kind needs necessary to provide adequate housing, basic services, and long-term support.

The needs are great and will require our communities and congregations to come together to contribute financially, offering housing, volunteer, and pray.

You can also stay involved in the work of advocacy in ensuring that the government of the United States honors its commitments to our Afghan allies.

Included with this video, there are links and information sources that can assist you in participating in any way that you can.

As Episcopalians in the late 1930s rose up to respond to allies, primarily Jewish allies fleeing tyranny in Europe, at the advent of the Second World War, as Episcopalians have continued to rise up wherever and whenever there has been human need, joining hands with other peoples of faith and people of goodwill, so now I invite you to rise up again for our Afghan friends, to stand with them in their time of need.

Thank you for all that you do.
    Thank you for this work.
Thank you for anything that you can do.

    God love you.
    God bless you.
And may God bless the people of Afghanistan wherever they may be. Amen.

    Episcopal Migration Ministries

    Episcopal Migration Ministries

The Episcopal Church has served immigrants new to the United States since the late 1800s, when the Church opened port chaplaincies to minister to sojourners on both coasts. In the 1930s, local parishes collected donations to provide steamship passage for those fleeing Nazi Europe. Out of this effort, the Presiding Bishop’s Fund for World Relief was born, the forerunner organization to Episcopal Relief & Development and Episcopal Migration Ministries.

Through the mid- and late 20th century, Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM) partnered with other faith organizations to resettle those oppressed by the Iron Curtain and the genocides of Southeast Asia. In the 1980s, EMM was formally established. In partnership with a network of affiliate agencies, dioceses, churches, and volunteers, EMM is today one of only nine national agencies through which all refugees enter the United States.

In the name of these refugees, aid all refugees. This is a World War II-era poster used to raise money for relief efforts in the Episcopal Church.

It remains to be seen if church services will be in-person or only on YouTube during the fall months.

    • If services are in-person, there will be a food sign up display posted in the parish hall.
    • If services are on-line, provision will be made for on-line sign-up.

Either way, the sign-up starts October 31, 2021.

Food basket delivery is on November 22, 2021, at a time to be determined. The staff at Kenmore Place has given the green light for us to knock and deliver the food door-to-door.

Susan Switzer will oversee basket assembly and delivery on November 22. This involves the following, at a minimum:

    • Open the church building.
    • Make sure all necessary items are in each basket.
    • Help volunteers.

Also, Susan may make in-person announcements at church services to remind people to sign up in the parish hall.

Our biggest need right now to find people to help on November 22. On delivery day, we need three or four people to assemble and deliver the baskets. Please let Michele Henderson, hkp@redeemer-kenmore.org, know if you would like to help.

Gift cards will be purchased for each family to buy the main course of their choice.

Hopelink Kenmore Place Christmas collection in 2016

    Christmas activities

Church of the Redeemer plans several activities during December for those living at Kenmore Place.

    Shopping trip

There will be no shopping trip again this year due to COVID-19.

    Christmas gifts

Christmas gifts will be very different beginning this year and moving forward. Hopelink has changed their policy for gifts to residents. We are no longer allowed to give personal gifts.

Instead, we will have a general gift sign-up and give unwrapped gifts to Kenmore Place. These gifts will be distributed throughout the year on children’s birthdays or when they move in as a “welcome” gift. Information will be made available on how to sign up as we approach this time.

Sign-ups for gifts will be posted on November 28, 2021.

    Christmas food baskets

Christmas food baskets will be handled like the Thanksgiving food baskets. Gift cards will be purchased for the main course. A display board (or on-line sign-up) will be provided for other items.

We do not know an exact date or time for delivery yet. This must be coordinated with staff at Kenmore Place. We are hoping to do delivery on either December 21, 22, or 23, 2021.

In addition to the baskets, this day will also be the time that we deliver the unwrapped gifts for later distribution.

Sign-ups for food baskets will be posted on November 28, 2021.

Hopelink provides a network of critical social services through a number of different programs—including housing, transportation, family development, financial assistance, employment programs, adult education, financial literacy training, and five food banks. The agency’s service centers, housing, and transportation programs help more than 63,000 people every year.

For families experiencing homelessness, transitional and long-term housing as well as emergency family shelter may be available through Hopelink.

    2020 holiday giving results

The annual Christmas gift and food basket collection for Hopelink Kenmore Place at Church of the Redeemer was adapted this year because of COVID-19. We could donate money towards a $100 Safeway gift card for the 11 residences at Kenmore Place. We could also donate money to a gift fund for all Hopelink locations. The giving continues.

Michelle Henderson, who organized Redeemer’s giving efforts this Christmas, said “Thank you to everyone who donated and looking forward to 2021 when we can once again gather to do the shopping trip and prepare the gifts and food baskets.” She also said that Hopelink raised about $75,000 to help families in need all over the region.

Any extra money raised for the special Safeway gift cards for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays goes towards the regular Safeway gift cards purchased through the rest of year for Kenmore Place. To donate for these cards, go to Giving on the Redeemer website, select the Give button, and then select Outreach from the To list.
