Hopelink Kenmore Place outreach for Fall 2021

The planned outreach activities for Fall 2021 through Church of the Redeemer for those experiencing housing insecurity living at Hopelink Kenmore Place are School supplies, Thanksgiving food baskets, and Christmas activities.

It remains to be seen if church services will be in-person or only on YouTube during the fall months.

    • If services are in-person, there will be a food sign up display posted in the parish hall.
    • If services are on-line, provision will be made for on-line sign-up.

Either way, the sign-up starts October 31, 2021.

Food basket delivery is on November 22, 2021, at a time to be determined. The staff at Kenmore Place has given the green light for us to knock and deliver the food door-to-door.

Susan Switzer will oversee basket assembly and delivery on November 22. This involves the following, at a minimum:

    • Open the church building.
    • Make sure all necessary items are in each basket.
    • Help volunteers.

Also, Susan may make in-person announcements at church services to remind people to sign up in the parish hall.

Our biggest need right now to find people to help on November 22. On delivery day, we need three or four people to assemble and deliver the baskets. Please let Michele Henderson, hkp@redeemer-kenmore.org, know if you would like to help.

Gift cards will be purchased for each family to buy the main course of their choice.

Hopelink Kenmore Place Christmas collection in 2016

    Christmas activities

Church of the Redeemer plans several activities during December for those living at Kenmore Place.

    Shopping trip

There will be no shopping trip again this year due to COVID-19.

    Christmas gifts

Christmas gifts will be very different beginning this year and moving forward. Hopelink has changed their policy for gifts to residents. We are no longer allowed to give personal gifts.

Instead, we will have a general gift sign-up and give unwrapped gifts to Kenmore Place. These gifts will be distributed throughout the year on children’s birthdays or when they move in as a “welcome” gift. Information will be made available on how to sign up as we approach this time.

Sign-ups for gifts will be posted on November 28, 2021.

    Christmas food baskets

Christmas food baskets will be handled like the Thanksgiving food baskets. Gift cards will be purchased for the main course. A display board (or on-line sign-up) will be provided for other items.

We do not know an exact date or time for delivery yet. This must be coordinated with staff at Kenmore Place. We are hoping to do delivery on either December 21, 22, or 23, 2021.

In addition to the baskets, this day will also be the time that we deliver the unwrapped gifts for later distribution.

Sign-ups for food baskets will be posted on November 28, 2021.

For families experiencing homelessness, transitional and long-term housing as well as emergency family shelter may be available through Hopelink.

    2020 holiday giving results

The annual Christmas gift and food basket collection for Hopelink Kenmore Place at Church of the Redeemer was adapted this year because of COVID-19. We could donate money towards a $100 Safeway gift card for the 11 residences at Kenmore Place. We could also donate money to a gift fund for all Hopelink locations. The giving continues.

Michelle Henderson, who organized Redeemer’s giving efforts this Christmas, said “Thank you to everyone who donated and looking forward to 2021 when we can once again gather to do the shopping trip and prepare the gifts and food baskets.” She also said that Hopelink raised about $75,000 to help families in need all over the region.

Any extra money raised for the special Safeway gift cards for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays goes towards the regular Safeway gift cards purchased through the rest of year for Kenmore Place. To donate for these cards, go to Giving on the Redeemer website, select the Give button, and then select Outreach from the To list.

  • 2020 holiday giving

    2020 holiday giving

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, we cannot do the typical things to bring holiday cheer to people at Hopelink Kenmore Place in 2020. We cannot donate physical items, such as food or gifts. However, we can still donate to those experiencing homelessness. We can do holiday giving.

This is what Church of the Redeemer is doing for this year. Your gift of any size is welcome, whether large or small. Let us all join to make for happy holidays for those experiencing homelessness.

    Thank you very much.

Thanksgiving holiday gift card for use at Safeway

Instead of collecting food items to give for a Thanksgiving meal, Church of the Redeemer will give the 11 Kenmore Place residences a $100 gift card to Safeway. Then, the families may shop for the foods they want or need.

This collection continues through Friday, November 20, 2020. They will receive the cards on Monday, November 23.

To donate online, select Giving on the Redeemer website menu, and then select the Give button. When the window opens, enter your gift details. To route the donation to the right place, from the To list, select Shelter-Thanksgiving.

If you send a check, send it to PO Box 82677, Kenmore, WA 98028, so it arrives by November 20, 2020. Add “Kenmore Place Thanksgiving” to the memo line.

We will apply any extra money collected to the Christmas holiday gift card collection in December or for grocery cards purchased in later months. It will be used so Kenmore Place residents can buy food.

    Holiday gifts for residents

This is where the biggest change this year. We cannot hold a holiday party. We cannot buy gifts for residents.

Hopelink is collecting money from their website for residents at all their housing locations, not only Kenmore Place, so residents to buy their own gifts.

This collection is now through December 4, 2020.

To donate, go to the Donate page on the Hopelink website. To route your donation for holiday gifts, do these two things while filling out the rest of the form:

    • Under Designation, from the list, select Greatest Needs. This may be selected already for you.
    • Under Billing Address, in the Leave a comment or note for your donation (optional) box, type Holiday Gift Program.

Holiday gift card for use at Safeway

This will be like the Thanksgiving collection. Church of the Redeemer will give the 11 Kenmore Place residences a $100 gift card to Safeway. Then, the families may shop for the foods they want.

This collection starts Tuesday, December 1, 2020, lasting through Friday, December 18, 2020. They will receive the cards on Monday, December 21.

To donate online, select Giving on the Redeemer website menu, and then select the Give button. When the window opens, enter your gift details. To route the donation to the right place, from the To list, select Shelter-Christmas.

If you send a check, send it to PO Box 82677, Kenmore, WA 98028, so it arrives by December 18, 2020. Add “Kenmore Place Christmas” to the memo line.

    Redeemer and Hopelink Kenmore Place

Church of the Redeemer has a long-term relationship with Hopelink Kenmore Place (formerly the Kenmore Family Shelter). For the past 30 years, people at Redeemer has provided support for Kenmore Place. The support includes the following:

    • Christmas gifts and food
    • School backpacks
    • Thanksgiving food
    • Emergency gas and food cards

    Backpacks for Hopelink Kenmore Place

Kenmore Place and its programs have changed over the years. It used to be a short-term residency. Now, the population remains at there for 6 to 12 months while the residents look for permanent housing and work.

One third of the current residents are there because a major medical problem caused the family to lose their housing. One third are in Kenmore Place as a result of domestic violence.

There is a mix of couples and single parents. All of the families have children under 18.

The residents appreciate the holiday food and gifts. “They helped me have a better Christmas than the one we had when we weren’t homeless. It was a beautiful day. I was worry free. The kids smiled for days,” said one resident.

Another said, “Tell them that on behalf of myself and my son.”

Thanksgiving collection for residents of Hopelink Kenmore Place in 2015

A couple of members of the congregation met with the current case manager to discuss ways we can continue to be of assistance. In addition to our ongoing assistance, residents need the following:

    • Feminine hygiene products
    • Queen sized sheets (gently used is OK)
    • Cutlery

These items can be donated anytime at Redeemer in the box in the parish hall.

Hopelink runs Kenmore Place. They have, and continue to, express their appreciation of our ongoing relationship.
